THE DISSOLVE DIASPORA: TOP 10 OF 2018
Happy New Year! Sam Van Hallgren here.

The Dissolve (2013-2015) - the late, great movie site from Pitchfork Media - has now been gone longer than it existed, but during its run, it consistently produced some of the best film writing and criticism in the business. (Yes, the archive still lives!) The site also featured some of the best writers in the business, including friends of Filmspotting Tasha Robinson, Scott Tobias, Keith Phipps and Genevieve Koski, who went on to start The Next Picture Show podcast. But the site had loads of other great contributors and even in the age of Film Twitter, it can be hard to keep track of everyone, especially at year-end when everyone is reflecting on the movie year.

Well, listener Kevin White did us all a big favor and tracked down Top 10 lists from many former Dissolvers and then, using a complex mathematical formula, came up with "The Dissolve's [UNOFFICIAL] Best Films of 2018." Check out Kevin's list on Letterboxd. Kevin also linked to all the individual lists, as well as to the lists he compiled for 2016 and 2017. Thanks, Kevin!

And while we're on the subject of Top 10s, here's mine
THE GOLDEN BRICK POLL IS REALLY REALLY CLOSE
With just under a thousand votes in, the Golden Brick Listeners Choice Poll is, yes, really really close. Like... lemme check... only 30 votes separating the top two. That lead has been as close as a two or three votes and has flip-flopped several times since the poll first posted.

Your 2018 Golden Brick finalists are:
Chloe Zhao's "The Rider" (available to rent on most platforms)
Bing Liu's "Minding the Gap" (streaming on Hulu)
Sandi Tan's "Shirkers" (streaming on Netflix)

Vote now!

The winner will be announced LIVE at the 2018 Wrap Party on Friday, Jan. 11. Hope to see you there!

THE NEXT PICTURE SHOW: LOOKING AT CINEMA'S PRESENT VIA ITS PAST
w/ Tasha Robinson, Scott Tobias, Genevieve Koski and Keith Phipps

NEW THIS WEEK:

"Great Power, Great Responsibility," Part 2: "Spider-Man 2" and "Into the Spider-Verse"

From Next Picture Show co-host and producer Geneveive Koski:

The remarkable new animated film SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE has us thwipping through the beloved web-slinger’s cinematic history to see how it culminated in a Miles Morales origin story that doubles as a giddy trip through Spidey-lore. After some collective swooning over SPIDERVERSE’s unique and eye-popping style and clever conceit, we put the new film in conversation with another top-tier Spider-man film, Sam Raimi’s 2004 sequel SPIDER-MAN 2, to see what the films share, and how they differ, in their respective handling of their various Spider-entities, their villains, and their setting. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar.

New episodes of The Next Picture Show drop Tuesdays at midnight CST. Subscribe here.
