NEW POLL: GOLDEN BRICK FINALISTS
Hey, there. Filmspotting producer Sam Van Hallgren here.
Over the weekend, the so-called "Golden Brick Committee" took a vote and culled the 12 "Brick" nominees down to three finalists: Chloe Zhao's "The Rider," Sandi Tan's "Shirkers" and Bing Liu's "Minding the Gap."
That same "Brick" committee - Adam, Josh and myself, along with Michael Phillips, Next Picture Show hosts Tasha Robinson, Genevieve Koski, Keith Phipps and Scott Tobias, and SVU friends Alison Willmore and Matt Singer - will also vote to name the winner of the 2018 Golden Brick. Also helping to determine the winner: your vote.
The winner will be announced at the 2018 Wrap Party - LIVE - on Friday, Jan. 11. Hope to see you there!
TOP 10 OF 2018
COMING FRIDAY TOP 10 OF 2018: PART 1 - "THE OUTLIERS"
w/ Tasha Robinson and Michael Phillips
Last year we tried something a little different with the Top 10 shows. Instead of doing a straight countdown from 10 to 1, we split the conversation into two parts, with part one devoted to the "outliers" and part two to the "consensus picks." "Outliers" being the films that, in most cases, only made one list, the quirky picks that are the symbols of Adam, Josh, Tasha and Michael's individuality and their belief in personal freedom. And consensus picks being those that showed up on two or more lists.
(Forgive me for the history lesson, but the fact is, I actually completely forgot we did this when it came time to plan this year's Top 10.)
Well, once we remembered we did it that way, we remembered that we liked it and decided to do it again this year. The result, in theory, is more a conversation about the best films of the year as opposed to a three-hour list of those films.
Are you considering coming from out of town? Maybe you need another film-related activity to justify the trip? How about seeing Alfonso Cuarón's ROMA in 70mm at Chicago's Music Box Theatre? More info here.

COMING TUESDAY: "Girl World" Part 2: "Mean Girls" & "The Favourite"
From Next Picture Show co-host and producer Geneveive Koski: Our trip through Girl World makes its second stop with Yorgos Lanthimos’ new period piece THE FAVOURITE, to see how its portrayal of women battling for social advantage in Queen Anne’s court looks next to the more contemporary high-school machinations of 2004’s MEAN GIRLS. After sharing our reactions to THE FAVOURITE and pinpointing its most “Lanthimosian” characteristics, we pit these two films against each other to see which portrayal of the cruelty and backbiting of Girl World—and Guy World!—is ultimately more fetch. Plus, Your Next Picture Show, where we share recent filmgoing experiences in hopes of putting something new on your cinematic radar.
New episodes of The Next Picture Show drop Tuesdays at midnight CST. Subscribe here.
