Inviting you to to the DREAM ASAL Conference 2019
The definitive forum for Resilience in Ethiopia's arid/semi-arid lowlands

September 29-October 03, 2019 :: Semera, Afar, Ethiopia

Dear Colleagues,

The DREAM is Development of Resilience Empowering Alternative Measures, for Ethiopian Lowlands.
ASAL, as many of you know, is Arid and Semi-Arid Lands.

The conference will take place in Semera, in Ethiopia's northern Afar region. Afar, mostly ASAL, has a marginal ecosystem marked by high temperatures (25-48°C); limited, erratic rainfall (under 300 mm annually); and seasonal streams (mostly tributaries of the Awash river) flowing in from the highlands. Less than 7% of the land is cultivable.

In response to these harsh conditions, the Afar people have over the years developed ingenious livelihood practices that involve symbiotic practice of agriculture and pastoralism. Over centuries, these systems have helped boost land productivity, reduce soil erosion, and improve nutrient and water-use efficiency.

This environmentally-adept way of life, these drought-resilient production systems, are coming under increasing pressure. Climate change, changes in rainfall pattern, population growth, and tapping of the Awash by large irrigation schemes are have put Afar people’s resilience to test. The last drought thinned out livestock considerably, leading to a number of people having to give up pastoralism. The poorest were the most effected, with many households becoming dependent on emergency relief measures.

What’s a good response? What are the right solutions? The DREAM ASAL 2019 conference will take stock of promising approaches from ASALs across the world.

The conference is being organised jointly by the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, the Afar Bureau of Livestock, and the GIZ SDR Support Programme (with support from MetaMeta). It consists of three parts:

  • Pre-Conference: September 29-30. Semera, Afar
    Challenge of invasive species: new ways of use or eradication
  • DREAM Excursion: October 1
    Field day visiting successful approaches of different organizations in zone 1 and 4, Afar region
  • DREAM Conference: October 2-3, Semera, Afar
    Stock Taking of Successful Approaches and Defining the Way Forward

We invite you to join us at the conference!

Hope to see you there!

With regards,
