📃 DIVERSITY IN TECH NEWS

While efforts are being made in the IT industry to promote diversity and inclusion, there is still a long way to go. In Victoria alone, women only make up 31% of the digital technology workforce (less than a third!), and only 1 in 5 Australian IT graduates are women. Underrepresentation is also prominent in the number of First Nations Australians working in the IT industry- only 0.66% of the workforce identifies as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin (compared to 3.3% of the Australian population) Moreover, 71% of gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer or asexual Australian IT workers, and 76% of people who identify as disabled or as living with disability have reported experiencing discrimination at work. The Australian Computer Society (ACS) has recently released the 2022 edition of Australia's Digital Pulse, a critical, "pre-eminent report on the state of the IT Industry in Australia". This year, the report places a key focus on the issues of diversity and inclusivity, providing examples of the impacts of discrimination in the workforce and the social and economic benefits of increasing diversity.
