The University of Alberta is proud of the cohort of international students who received the 2020 Graduate Student Teaching Award. UAlberta International reached out to the international student recipients for a quick Q & A to share what motivates them. 

The Graduate Student Teaching Awards (GSTA) annually recognize outstanding graduate teaching assistants in each faculty at the University of Alberta.

What It Was Like to Be a Student Abroad When COVID-19 Was Declared a Pandemic

While many of us are getting used to living and working in isolation while staying home, PhD student Jessica Serbu is already a pro. A graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences, Jessica studies glacial melt, water quality, and carbon dioxide cycling in water through field work in the Rocky Mountains and the Arctic.

A typical research trip for Jessica means weeks without virtual or in-person contact with others. Her days involve hiking between locations, collecting water samples, and analyzing results back in her tent. Jessica finds the isolated nature of her work peaceful and a welcome retreat from the busyness of everyday life.

The economic and market impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak have dramatically impacted all markets and industries, including the oil sector. Demand destruction combined with significant oversupply has caused price collapse and created serious shortages in storage capacity. 
This trilateral webinar was organized alongside the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Energy, Law & Business at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Energy Initiative at Tecnologico de Monterrey. The webinar included experts from the three countries, who provided an assessment of each country's oil and gas sector reality during COVID 19, and policy recommendations essential for the sector to move from crisis to recovery. 
The webinar’s panel included: 

  • Barry Smitherman, former Texas Railroad Commissioner and Chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas

  • Dr. Luis Serra, Chief Executive of the Energy Initiative at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico 

  • Dr. Joseph Doucet, Dean of the University of Alberta School of Business as well as energy and regulatory economics and policy expert

  • Moderator Marianne Kah, Adjunct Senior Research Scholar and Advisory Board member at the Center on Global Energy Policy, Columbia University.

On May 27, 2020, US Consul General in Calgary Lucia C. Piazza was the guest speaker for the inaugural webinar in the University of Alberta’s Diversity in Diplomacy speaker series. The Consul General shared her experiences in working around the globe as an out LGBT+ diplomat in conversation with Prof. Lois Harder, Principal of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College, and Dr. Susanne Luhmann, Director of the Intersections of Gender Signature Area.

Appointment: Associate Dean, International Relations in Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Xin-Min Li as associate dean of International Relations for a five-year term, which commenced May 1, 2020.

Dr. Li completed his MD (1982) and PhD (1988) at Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, China. He did his post-doctoral training at the University of Saskatchewan and Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency in psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan.
