The University’s response to COVID-19 has required a great amount of coordination and support across campus during this challenging time.

Here are some of the ways that UAI has been connecting with the campus community and international contacts to provide support:

  • Immigration advisors are working to stay up to date on rapidly changing immigration policies and using their professional networks to seek clarification that enable us to continue to provide professional and accurate services to students.

  • Online advising is being offered through e-mail, Google Meet, and Google Hangouts.

  • Regular online group advising sessions are being held related to immigration.

  • We continue to support students abroad and in particular, the past few weeks have focused on assisting those students returning to Canada. Students abroad needing UAI assistance can reach us at

  • Regular updates are being sent to international students as needed via direct e-mail and social media.

  • Keeping in touch with international university and government contacts as relates to our students abroad, international students at UAlberta (including visiting and sponsored students), and our partnership relations. Hundreds of letters have been sent to international partners.

  • Online events, such as webinars, are being planned for various audiences.

  • The policy regarding the use of grades at time of admission as final for students impacted by examination cancellations due to COVID-19, has been well received by applicants, their parents, high-schools and recruitment partners around the world. UAlberta is one of the first universities to have a clear and proactive policy.

If there is any way that UAI can be of assistance to the many issues you are managing in this challenging time please contact us.

UAlberta students abroad: Getting real in Cuba
Avishta Seeras, a Latin American Studies and Political Science student, won the Edmonton Consular Corps Award, and the money helped her to embark on a three week Spring program to Cuba. The course was focused on Cuban culture, and how the perception of Cuba  compares with its reality. While it was taught in English, Avishta did have opportunities to improve her Spanish skills and picked up on certain colloquialisms of Cuban Spanish while sightseeing and interacting with locals.

While in Cuba, Avishta embraced Cuban culture with open arms, especially the rich culture surrounding music. As a dancer, she was intrigued by the dance scene and went out to multiple dance classes to meet new people. There was no shortage of places or opportunities to experience music— there is a lot of live music in Cuba, and where there is music there is dancing! She recalls that people would be out late enjoying the songs.
