Many people suffer with acne at some point in their lives. As much as you’d like to forget your pimpled past your face would remind you that in the form of scars. Acne scarring comes from acne that does not heal properly. However, acne scars do not have to be permanent, as modern medical treatment can help reduce them.

What treatment can reduce acne scars?

Laser treatment can reduce the appearance of acne scars. It uses focused light therapy to either remove the outer layer of the skin’s surface or stimulate the production of new skin cells to cover damaged skin cells.

Although it does not completely remove a scar, laser treatment can help reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles, age spots, scars, warts and keloids.

How does laser treatment work for acne scars?

Laser treatment works by pulsing intense light into the skin. This process encourages the production of collagen and prompts cells to start regenerating. The body’s natural healing process peels off the damaged tissue, revealing fresh skin underneath. It’s like resurfacing the damaged parts of your skin!

Which laser treatment will work for acne scars?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium are the two most commonly used lasers for acne scars. Both lasers vaporizes damaged skin cells.

Are there any side effects of laser treatment?

Patients may experience mild swelling, pain, redness and temporary oozing which usually disappear in a day or two.

Laser treatment for scars is an outpatient procedure. It should only be performed by a board-certified dermatologist.
