Term One Highlights

We have had an exciting first term. While our space at St. Michael’s is being renovated we have been meeting at the church behind the school. It is a beautiful space for music, and we are very grateful to St. Michael’s Parish Church for their generosity. Our core after-school programme is now at 70 students. In-school classes, in partnership with Orchestra Wellington, are going on at Tui Glen and Koraunui School in Stokes Valley. Both schools have “satellite programmes” after school, with students from the past two years who wanted to continue learning.

Off to Te Papa we went...

Our first event was a 1-day work-shop at Te Papa, shared with conductor Prof. Donald Maurice and Stringendo. The kids had a great time, made new friends and enjoyed a successful concert at the beautiful Te Marae.
Many thanks to our partners Kaibosh Food Rescue, the Upper Hutt Community Youth Trust, and to Te Papa and Stringendo for this day of music.

Arohanui, along with the three other Sistema NZ consortium members, are proud that we have received funding from the Todd Foundation for this year. Fund-raising efforts this year will also include a raffle and sponsorship campaign.

Small groups playing...

A tour group went to give a concert to the Johnsonville Probus Club in March. The students were thrilled to have a quick visit with Mrs. Birch, former Principal of St. Michael’s School, next door at St. Bridget’s. Thank you to Johnsonville Probus for the opportunity and the shuttle!

Behind the scenes...

Behind the scenes, Arohanui Strings-Sistema Hutt Valley has just formed a Board of Trustees.  We are proud to be working with Chair and longtime volunteer/event coordinator Stephanie McLean,  Lee-Anne Duncan, Barbara Hay, as well as Anchana Sungsuwan, Barbara Asara, Alison Eldredge and David Moonan. Also this year we are proud that Helene Pohl of the NZ String Quartet is our Music Ambassador. Many thanks to these experienced and capable Board members and to Helene for her ongoing support!
We are so proud of our bass boys
