Your Local Connection, Worldwide

Hello Chapter Leaders!

It’s been a long time since many of us were in a room together. Over the past two years, we have been faced with unprecedented challenges in building our local and international communities. This past year was especially challenging for me as the Chair of the Professional and Student Chapters Committee, trying to strike the right balance among maintaining our organization, pursuing new initiatives, and giving you all some freedom to deal with Zoom fatigue, a loss of quality home time, and some very unusual conference obligations.

As the world gradually opens up, and as many of us plan to return to our first physical SIGGRAPH conference since 2019, the Chapters Committee is preparing to inject some energy back into our worldwide community. I hope that you will consider joining us for the Chapter Leaders Hangout that Amira emailed an invitation to recently. This is meant to be a social call and an opportunity to relax and reconnect after too much time apart! As a reminder, that is scheduled on Zoom for 12PM Eastern (5PM London / 9AM Pacific) on April 23rd, and you can direct questions to Amira at amalcom@siggraph.org.

During the call, we look forward to sharing some of the virtual and on-site conference activities the Chapters Committee is planning. (A formal email will follow for anyone who misses the hangout.) The on-site conference this year will be smaller than it has been in the past, but we would like to bring back all the parts of the conference that we love.
We are still trying to determine whether we will be able to host the iconic annual Chapters Party at a nightclub in Vancouver in person. Due to budget cuts, this event can only happen with external sponsorships. If you think you might have a connection to a company or other entity that would be willing to be one of the sponsors of this year’s Chapters Party, please let us know as soon as possible! Please email pscc@acmsiggraph.org.

I would also like to announce that we are looking for new help on the Chapters Committee. We do not want to steal leaders away from their chapters, but if you have recently stepped down from a leadership role in your chapter, or if you have someone in your chapter who is ready for more responsibility, please consider filling out this nomination form!

We have all been on some unusual journeys throughout the pandemic. Some chapters have shrunk, and others have expanded with the broad reach of virtual events! Whatever your journey, it is likely that your needs and perspectives have changed, and I welcome your feedback at achrist3@siggraph.org.

Thank you for all that you do!

AJ Christensen
