Mel's Magic Moments Dinner Dance
 
Our theme this year is Mexican Fiesta, and the date is March 14th. We are SOOO pumped again about Mel's Magic Moment Dinner Dance. It is so much fun and heart filling to watch our CHS students interact with our guests; I am not sure who leaves at the end of the night with bigger smiles. The generosity and support Innovative Storage Designs and Mel's Charities provides for this incredible opportunity is impossible to describe. Rarely am I speechless,  LOL, but  this event takes my breath away, and fills my heart knowing that we are able to carry on Niki’s (Doedens) vision.

Mel’s Magical Night is a fun and easy opportunity to put a smile on some of the kindest people’s faces.  I love Mel’s Magical Night because I get to have a helping hand in putting together a night that means so much to many around the community.  Whether we are greeting all the attendees or dancing with friends, there is truly never a dull moment. This will be my fourth year helping with the event, and I am excited to see what this year’s dance has in store.

Mel’s Magic Moment Dinner dance is a night where everyone can feel proud to be themselves and to embrace their differences. It’s a place where judgement seems to be obliterated and smiles seem never ending. This is my second year being a chairman for Mel’s Magical Night and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of something so special. It’s a night where I make new friends each year and everyone seems to be one. It’s not just a fun night for our friends with special needs but a fun night for each and every person there... I couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of this night and I’m very, very excited for this upcoming dance!!

Innovative Designs is financial supporter of this special evening. Dave Schenker, Owner of Innovative Storage Designs is a strong support of Mel’s Charities due to the amazing work they do in Ozaukee county.   Anything we can do to support Tom and Mel’s Charities is a privilege as they are on the front line of making a difference in everyday lives.
 
Ross Shares His Thoughts
 
Niki Doedens organized Portal Prom for many years. A huge group from Portal, that has participants with Special Needs, were invited to spend a special evening with a dinner that is Catered by From Scratch Catering and a dance hosted by Cedarburg High School Community service. 

Portal was not able to continue hosting this dance, so Mel's Charities stepped in and change the name to Mel's Magic Moments Dinner Dance.  The evening is put on by Cedarburg High School Community Service.  The students serve food to our guests and take part in the dance. Patty Clapper & Mrs. Kennedy are the leads of the Community Service program, they find the student volunteers to run the event. To see many Participants from Portal showing the Spirit and the lives being touched is special we are blessed to share this evening with the Cedarburg High School students.

February 25th is my birthday.  I will be turning 37 this year.  I want to thank everyone for being there for me, I have my family and all of my best friends wishing me a great birthday.

You Can't Make This Stuff Up
Growing Again (and we’re just getting started)

When we first started Mel’s Charities, all the office space I needed was in the pockets of my jeans. I never imagined a need for a regular office or storage space.

As our Great Times for Great Causes grew, so did our need to get organized.  One small box grew into dozens of boxes stored in our basement and garage. (Poor Nancy). These boxes not only contained all the proper financials for our 501(c)3 requirements, but just as important, all the cards, letters and pictures documenting the lives we helped impact. We needed to preserve this history.

Approximately eight years ago, I heard about the Family Enrichment Center (FEC) in Grafton. The FEC is a unique place where human service nonprofits share office and meeting space, resources, expertise, expenses and a passion for serving the community. Our Board and I agreed this would be the ideal location for Mel’s Charities, so it became our “Global Headquarters.”

Working out of the FEC provided much needed space at a very reasonable cost and the opportunity to collaborate with some of our local non-profits who impact lives every day. Over the years Mel’s Charities has donated over $100,000 to the FEC and their partner agencies. To learn more about the FEC visit

While have been fortunate to share space at the FEC, our continued growth requires even more space for volunteer office staff, meeting rooms and storage (even though most of our files have been digitized and stored on Google Drive). Fortunately, our good friends at Ansay & Associates provided a solution.

On March 2nd, Ansay & Associates (formerly Koehler Insurance) will move to W61N297 Washington Avenue in historic Cedarburg. They have been kind enough to offer part of their space so we can create a unique and colorful office for Mel’s Charities that doubles our current space.

But as we keep saying, we’re just getting started. We’ll soon be able to share some exciting news about our involvement with Destination Saukville, a game-changing development that will address a critical need for housing, employment, recreation and fellowship for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities.

Lee Owens has been a huge supporter of Mel's Charities. Owen's Office Products and Printing does all the printing for Mel's and has never charged us a thing. Thank you Lee!

It is us who should be thanking you for allowing us to be part of your mission, we truly believe in what you do for our community and that is why we choose to support Mel's. The fact that the dollars you raise through your hard work stay "here" is a big reason we help out.  We in turn can give back through you.  We honestly seek no recognition but if it will help Mel's to achieve goals then recognize away and thank-you.  Keep up the great work and we will continue to do what we can.

On February 4th we helped raise awareness & support for the CHS Best Buddies program. It took place before, during and after the CHS girls basketball game.

An Email from a Supporter
Okay so I couldn't wait to see it and I just got done.  Closed the door to my office, put my headset on, and clicked play.

Jesus is alive Tom.  He is alive in you and He touches the hearts of others through your life.  That you are humble and understand how blessed you are, and you still remember a time when your heart ached to have more purpose is why God gave you this assignment.  You make the big guy smile.

I love this video piece.  You can hear it in the testimonies, see it on the faces. Something extraordinary is taking place here and the kind of love God built into all of us has been given a time and place to shine.
