Recap: GIM at ACP 2019 in Philadelphia

GIM was well represented at the recent American College of Physicians Internal Medicine meeting that took place April 11-13 in Philadelphia.

Dr. Michael Lazarus was announced as ACP Southern California 1 Chapter Governor-elect. He will complete a year of training as a Governor-elect and then will start his four-year term as Governor in the Spring of 2020.

Dr. Rachel Brook was on the scientific program planning committee and presented the closing session, "Highlights of the ACP Conference." She also presented "Multiple Small Feedings of the Mind – Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, and Women’s Health," which also featured Drs. Janet Pregler and Eric Yang

Dr. Carolyn Crandall co-led a session, "News You Can Use," regarding the ACP’s guidelines on Breast Cancer Screening and Pelvic Exam screening, about which was interviewed in a Q&A on Consultant 360.

Dr. Kenrik Duru presented "Back pain: Get your patient back in the game," about which he was interviewed in Healio Primary Care Today.

Dr. Jason Napolitano presented a talk on "In-Flight Emergencies."

R3s  Drs. David Ovaisi and Lauren Sullivan and R2 Dr. Evan Shih (pictured above) represented UCLA in the Doctor’s Dilemma, after advancing from the regional competition.  UCLA had a strong showing in the nephrology category especially, with a score of 160.  However, they did not advance when all teams answered the final question (Lady Windermere Syndrome) correctly.

Look ahead to the 2020 ACP Internal Medicine Meeting to be held here in Los Angeles, April 23-25, 2020 (Pre-Courses April 21-22), at the Convention Center.  Registration is open now.
GIM in the News

Carolyn Crandall, MDDr. Carolyn Crandall will be Associate Editor of a new series, JAMA Clinical Insights: Women's Health.  Working with Deputy Editor Dr. Edward Livingston, she outlines the vision for the series in an Editorial:

"JAMA Clinical Insights: Women’s Health series will encompass virtually every discipline of medicine, acknowledging the increasing appreciation of the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to health and disease. This series will highlight issues of high clinical relevance to clinicians. The articles will be brief, concise, and emphasize graphical presentation of material to maximize their utility to practicing clinicians.

The series will include the effect of women’s health on all fields of medicine. Articles will therefore target a wide range of signs and symptoms, life transitions (eg, menarche, menopause, pregnancy), and diseases relevant to women’s health over the lifespan."

The Series debuted in April with the article, "Treatment of Nonmetastatic Breast Cancer."
