Congratulations, Dr. Mangione!

Carol Mangione, MDGIM Division Chief Dr. Carol Mangione was elected to National Academy of Medicine for her research on how system-level interventions, benefit design, and cost-sharing affect quality and outcomes for low-income persons with diabetes.

Membership in the academy is among the highest honors in the field of medicine and health. It demonstrates exceptional professional achievement as well as a commitment to service.

Call for Volunteers: Care Harbor LA, Nov. 15-17

We would like to encourage you to volunteer at the annual Care Harbor Free Health Clinic to be held Friday, November 15th to Sunday, November 17th, 2019 at The Reef, 1933 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90007.

This annual health fair provides free medical, dental and vision care to thousands of uninsured and underinsured people in our communities. 

The Department of Family Medicine will cover Friday, November 15th, so we need general internist volunteers for Saturday and Sunday. Morning Shift: 8:00am – 12:30pm; Afternoon Shift: 12:00pm - 5:00pm; All Day Shift: 8:00am – 5:00pm

November 22: DMPG Annual Meeting
The Department of Medicine Professional Group Annual Meeting will be held at Covell Commons on Friday, November 22nd at 7:30 am.  Breakfast will be served. 

Jodi Friedman, MDAll members of the Department of Medicine Professional Group (faculty physicians) are strongly encouraged to attend.  Dr. Alan Fogelman, Executive Chair of the Department of Medicine, will review the state of the clinical practice.  Dr. Jodi Friedman, Executive Vice Chair for Education for the Department of Medicine, will review educational efforts, including plans for a new curriculum in the medical school.

GIM Faculty Job Opening

The Division of General Internal Medicine & Health Services Research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System invite applications for faculty positions at the Instructor, Assistant, Associate or Professor level (MD or PhD).

Successful applicants will have conducted outstanding, independent scholarly work in health services research with clear implications for clinical practice or population health management. Areas of focus include but are not limited to machine learning/artificial intelligence, implementation science, evaluation of natural experiments and/or interventions at the practice, health system, and/or policy levels, cost-effectiveness analysis, and expertise with mixed methods inclusive of qualitative research approaches. 

Applicants must have the potential to obtain peer-reviewed funding and to serve as PI on multidisciplinary research teams. For physicians, research training via fellowship, Master’s, or PhD program is highly desirable. For PhD only candidates, post-doctoral training is highly desired, but not required. The position includes teaching research skills to fellows. Physicians will also care for patients as well as teach and supervise clinical trainees.

Celebrating Fellows' Achievements
Carlos Oronce, MDJacob Quinton, MDUCLA National Clinician Scholar Dr. Carlos Oronce has been named as new Associate Member Representative of the Society for General Internal Medicine Council for 2020. 

UCLA National Clinician Scholar Dr. Jake Quinton is the new Chair-Elect of the Council of Residents and Fellows for the American College of Physicians (ACP CRFM). 

Eric Fein, MDRecent NRSA Fellowship graduate and new Harbor-UCLA faculty Dr. Eric Fein presented two of his fellowship projects at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.  With two of his mentors, NCSP affiliates Drs. Sheryl Kataoka and Roya Ijadi-Maghsoodi, he presented his results from a school-based, trauma-informed resilience skills curriculum for parents of urban public school children. Also presented was his evaluation of a high school-based mental health club, co-authored with NCSP affiliates Drs. Bowen Chung, Paul Chung, Rebecca Dudovitz, Sheryl Kataoka & Moira Inkelas.

RCMAR CHIMECTSIIt is with great pleasure that we announce a Request for Applications (RFA) for one-year pilot-study awards of up to $45,000 for the academic year 2020-21.

Applications are being accepted from under-represented minority junior- and mid-level faculty and post-doctoral researchers. Applicants are required to have a faculty appointment between 07/01/2020 – 6/30/2021 at UCLA or at another academic institution/organization in the greater Los Angeles area. Applicants that are funded will conduct a pilot research project that focuses on minority older adult populations.
