Over 350 faculty attended the 4th annual Department of Medicine Professional Group retreat, including over 100 members of the Division of GIM/HSR. Presenters at the Division Meeting Drs. Michael Lazarus and Roger Lee of the Section of Hospitalist Medicine, described the “Refer to Hospitalist, Adult” order in CareConnect and Haiku that results in an immediate/ASAP call back from the admitting community hospitalist (valid for all hospitals except RRMC and SM UCLA). Faculty are encouraged to call for any patient going to a community ED who might be admitted, even if admission is not certain. For some hospitals, direct admission can be arranged. Hospitalists can provide information, including services available at a particular hospital. For RRMC and SM UCLA admissions, as well as when it’s unclear which hospital to refer a patient to, 1-855-884-4100 is the number to call for information and referral. Drs. Maria Han and Ashley Busuttil of GIM presented on outpatient and inpatient quality initiatives, along with Dr. Fola May of the Division of Digestive Diseases.
GIM/HSR faculty presented or facilitated workshops on Caring for Gender Diverse Patients, Improving the Educational Experience for Medical Students, Benefits, CareConnect and Haiku, Improving Inpatient Billing, and Certification for Suboxone Subscribing.
Dr. Eisenman also provided guidance for a New York Times advisory article, "Is Travel to Italy and Asia Safe? Your Coronavirus Questions, Answered," over the weekend. Dr. Joann Elmore, Professor of Medicine and Public Health andRosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Endowed Chair in Health Care Delivery,was featured on CBS This Morning. The piece, "Artificial intelligence aims to improve breast cancer diagnoses," had her discuss her use of computer A.I. to better interpret breast biopsies. GIM Division Manager, Norma Vaquerano, was also featured in the piece, sharing her personal experience of dealing with a false positive diagnosis.
