Featured Dogs:

Cassie and Trixie

Cassie is a sweet four-year-old pittie who came to us from Be Their Voice Rescue which saved her and 19 other dogs from horrific conditions in an abandoned house. Cassie has already put her past behind her and just wants to give and receive love. She is a calm companion, content to chew on a toy, lie in your lap, and give kisses. She is also great with kids. If you would like to give Cassie the loving home she deserves, please fill out an application or call 716-672-1991 to set up a meet & greet. Homeowners only due to breed and size restrictions with rentals.
Trixie is a two-year-old pittie with a big smile who also came from the abandoned house via Be Their Voice Rescue. But she is still full of life and love. Trixie is affectionate and good with kids. She loves to run so a big yard and some kids to play with would suit her well, therefore, homeowners only. If you would like this great dog in your family, please submit an application or call for an appointment: 716-672-1991.

Featured Cats:

Bentley, Jacko, Denise

Bentley is a beautiful golden hued tabby about 2 years old. Bentley is very sweet, but at first is shy and timid and will avoid attention but will warm up to you if you are patient and give him a chance. He lives with other cats at the shelter and gets along well with them.

Jacko is a sweet white male with some tabby features on head, rear and tail. He is a sweet cat who likes affection, sitting on your lap, and is very friendly. Jacko wants all your attention. He also likes playing with his toys. He lives with other cats at the shelter and gets along fine with them.
Denise is a beautiful black longhaired female about 6 years old. She is affectionate, can be picked up and snuggled and is a possible lap cat! She lives with other cats at the shelter and they get along fine. Denise is a calm and gentle girl. She has cataracts, and so is blind or partially blind in one eye.

Volunteer Spotlight
This month we get to know the Tuesday morning volunteers.
Tuesday morning Cat Crew:
Kathy Dolce, Susan Brown, Donna House
Kathy Dolce’s love of cats brought her to LHS upon her retirement last September from the billing department at Lakeshore Hospital. She has had rescues before and currently has three cats and a dog. Kathy is married with three grown daughters and a son in high school. She also has four grandsons. She enjoys reading and gardening.

Susan Brown also loves cats and was helping a neighbor with rescues. So, about four years ago she decided to start caring for the cats at the LHS adoption center. Susan previously had a career as a preschool teacher in Texas. She is married with one daughter. Her home also includes four cats and one dog. Susan likes reading and spending time outdoors, especially in her flower garden.

And Donna House loves cats, of course, and had always planned to volunteer at a shelter after retirement. She did just that, starting at LHS eight years ago upon retiring from her job as office manager of a dental practice after 34 years. Donna is married and has a stepdaughter, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson. Her interests include gardening, biking, snowmobiling, and travel.

Tuesday morning Dog Crew:
Cindy Smith, Patti Mleczko, Sally Austin, Lisa Vecchio
Cindy Smith started volunteering at LHS in January because she loves animals and was encouraged by her close friend, Sue, the current president. She retired from WNYDDSO after 33 years as a social worker. She is married to Lynn, who is also retired, and they have two grown daughters. Cindy enjoys gardening, scrapbooking, walks, and relaxing in her pool. She needs to take a couple of months off from the dogs for knee surgery but hopes to be walking them again soon.

Patti Mleczko has been volunteering at LHS since 2019 when she retired from a 40-year career in health care. She loves animals and has two cats who won’t tolerate a dog so she gets her dog fix at the adoption center. Patti is married and has three sons. She likes to garden, bike, and explore the country with her husband in their new motor home.

Sally Austin loves to work with animals and has been a volunteer for two years. She earned a fine arts degree from JCC and is looking for a job in that field. Sally lives with her parents and brother. The family also includes a dog, two cats, and a cockatiel. In addition to caring for the family pets, she likes to read and draw.

Lisa Vecchio just started at LHS in early June. She loves animals but her cats also can’t tolerate dogs, so she gets to see dogs at LHS. She is a relationship banker at M&T Bank which gives its employees time off to volunteer in the community. Lisa is married with four daughters. Only one is left at home, so Lisa is looking for what to do next. In addition to visiting her kids, she likes to travel.
