Adoption News
Featured Dog:
Ollie is a handsome 10 month old German Shorthair Pointer/ Heeler Mix. This friendly boy is a combination of two energetic breeds who are happiest when the they have a job to do. He will need an active owner to exercise him regularly. Ollie will also need to continue working on basic commands and leash walking. He is very smart and treat motivated so he should catch on quick.

Please make sure you have the time, energy, and patience to train an older puppy. No renters please due to restrictions of landlords. If you are interested in giving Ollie the life he deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Saturdays from 12 to 3 pm and Wednesdays 6 to 8 pm.
Featured Cat:
Itty Bitty
Itty Bitty is a very pretty silver grey tabby. He is only 2 years old but has spent most of his life here at our shelter. He is a shy boy who takes time to warm up to you, but has overcome a lot of his shyness in the past few months. Stop in on a Saturday afternoon or Wednesday evening to meet this special guy.

Events and Visits

Appreciating Purina
LHS volunteers had a chance to thank employees of Dunkirk Purina during last month's Nestle Purina Employee Appreciation Day. LHS showed up at the plant with a slide show tribute, loads of snacks, and dog and cat ambassadors. And Purina held a t-shirt fundraiser for LHS!

Spa Days at BOCES Vet Tech
The BOCES Veterinary Technician program has been welcoming a different dog from LHS every other Friday to spend the day getting pampered as students practice their vet tech skills on a live patient. Here is Ollie on a recent visit.

Rugby Team Cleans Up LHS Garden
Players from the Blackhorse Rugby team were back to help again recently, this time on the outside. They cleaned up the garden at the Adoption Center in preparation for spring and then spent time loving up the dogs and cats. Thank you, ladies!

LHS Dogs Lend a Paw
Some of our dogs got out of the Adoption Center on a sunny day to participate in the Lend a Paw for Autism fundraising walk at SUNY Fredonia.

Volunteer Spotlight
The Thursday afternoon cat crew includes two social workers and two probation officers as well as an artistic teen, so these are clearly people with good hearts.
Thursday afternoon cat volunteers (l-r):
Jennifer Rhodes, Elizabeth Rhodes, Jodi Tarnowski, Marie Damico
Not pictured: Lisa VanVlack
Jennifer Rhodes
Jennifer began volunteering at LHS last November because her daughter Elizabeth was interested, and they thought it would be a nice thing to do together. Their family also includes her husband Jason and son Gabriel, as well as three cats and a dog. Jennifer is a social worker at Buffalo Hearing & Speech in Angola. She enjoys spending time with family, including her elderly parents.

Elizabeth Rhodes
Elizabeth is in 10th grade at Forestville High School and works at Burger King in Irving. Her passion is art, especially drawing and painting. She also plays soccer and is learning to drive.

Jodi Tarnowski
Jodi has been with LHS for about nine years, calling it cheap therapy. She began when her two children were in high school and wanted to do community service. Now that the kids are grown, it’s just she and her husband at home, along with a dog and a bird. Jodi works as a probation officer and likes to garden.

Marie Damico
Marie has been volunteering with LHS for 7 to 8 years, ever since her sister Jodi roped her into it, and she also calls it her therapy. She and her husband Dave have a dog, Reign, adopted from LHS, as well as four house cats and various strays. Marie is a social worker with the Dunkirk Schools. She likes to read and garden.

Lisa VanVlack
Lisa was invited to volunteer by Marie and started a little over a year ago. She said she likes animals more than people. She and her husband have a Boxer but he’s allergic to cats so she has to get her cat fix at LHS. She’s a probation officer and enjoys traveling.

Is Biggie dreaming of a car ride for a TimBit run?
'Cause that's where he's going.
