DALI Newsletter March 2021

Welcome to the March 2021 newsletter from the DALI Alliance. This month, we announced our new Board and also presented an update on control gear for emergency lighting. As explained in our new Blog article, we will shortly publish a set of new specifications that define wireless solutions for DALI, providing flexibility and choice for the connected lighting market. Also, next week we are supporting the DALI China Summit in Beijing.

Wireless solutions for DALI: Extending the reach of DALI in an IoT world

With its rich feature set, DALI is already very well positioned to participate in IoT environments. However, the upcoming specifications that define wireless solutions for DALI will add further flexibility and choice for DALI users, always with a focus on certification and interoperability. 

The specifications cover two distinct approaches. First, the DALI Alliance has created specifications for gateways between DALI and two prominent wireless ecosystems, namely Bluetooth mesh and Zigbee.

Gateways translate between protocols, and allow existing DALI wired products to be used in a non-DALI wireless ecosystem.

The second approach is wireless DALI, where devices communicate using existing DALI commands, carried over a wireless medium. The DALI devices form the wireless network, and there is no need for translation between protocols. Wireless DALI enables the same set of lighting-control features that are available in DALI-2 and D4i.

DALI Alliance elects Board of Directors

The DALI Alliance elected a new Board of Directors at its General Assembly meeting on March 1st, 2021.

Arnulf Rupp, Head of Standardization at Osram, was re-elected as Chair, and Jens Herter, Head of Global Standardization & Funding at Tridonic, continues as Vice-Chair.

The other DALI Alliance Board members are:

DALI China Summit takes place in Beijing on April 9th

The DALI Alliance is pleased to announce that the DALI China Summit 2021 will be held on Friday 9th April, 2021 in Beijing.

Once again we are collaborating with First Design, our partner for the successful 2019 event.

The DALI China Summit 2021 will include a full day of conference presentations, with table-top exhibits, and will be hosted in a city-centre hotel.

Gold sponsors for the 2021 event are Delta Electronics, Helvar and NVC Lighting.

DALI Emergency: An update on standards and DALI-2 certification

The DALI Alliance recently provided an update on DALI and DALI-2 emergency lighting in a presentation to ZVEI, the German industry association.

The presentation covers the status of Part 202 of IEC 62386 (control gear for self-contained emergency lighting), and the changes that are being implemented in edition 2 of this standard. 

The DALI Alliance is in the final phase of evaluating the DALI-2 tests for Part 202 emergency. The release date for the tests is expected to be in mid 2021, which will then enable DALI-2 certification and trademark usage.

Q&A and webinar materials available

The DALI Alliance, the Zhaga Consortium and Dekra have now provided written answers to all the questions that were asked by viewers of the recent webinar entitled "How to get Zhaga-D4i certification for luminaires, sensors and communication nodes." 

Speakers described how to achieve Zhaga-D4i certification for different product types, covering the technical requirements as well as the key testing and verification steps.
