March 6 - 12th, 2017

I hope this week finds everyone well and rested! Here's some of what's up this week.

LOCAL
1) Wendy tipped me off to a group doing a great job prioritizing all bills on deck in MN; this week's summary is here. Sign up for their email list here. I think I've signed up on every email list in MN by now and this one is the most focused on legislation I've seen. It's great! Focus on bills with hearings scheduled this week, and let your rep know how you'd like them to vote.

If you look at that list and feel overwhelmed, I can relate. I can't believe how busy the GOP is in Minnesota. A bill so that you wouldn't need a permit to have a gun? A bill to eliminate research into mass transit? A bill to allow companies to write their own environmental impact statement? These read like a bad comedy, but they are very real. So I'll be spending some time reviewing these and giving folks a jingle.

We're also tracking several other bills, including HF 1183, "Health plans not required to cover health services related to gender transition", and several gerrymandering bills. But they seem fairly quiet this week.

As always, you can research any bill, status, author, etc. on the MN legislature website.

NATIONAL

1) Iif anyone wants info on exactly what's in play right now in terms of action related to Russia, there's a great summary here. There are two specific Action Items on that page.

2) The Women's March Strike is Wednesday, March 8th. Follow #ADayWithoutWomen if you're on the Twitters. I'm not seeing overwhelming excitement for this, but people are game and at least wearing red in solidarity. I work for myself, and I'm not striking against myself, but I'm happy to wear red. These signals can be important, more for finding each other than anything.

3) The group Flippable is targeting action around flippable special elections. They've already helped get a dem victory in one! They've prioritized Georgia's 6th congressional district next, so if you know any people in Georgia, start letting them know they need door-knockers and get-out-the-voters. More info here.

That's plenty for one week! Be well and remember nurture your inner naptivist and snacktivist as well ;)

A stressful but true message from a statue: Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.
