BIZ: Yesterday, Prez Trump hit the delay button on his latest round of tariffs on China - which affect Chinese-made products like cellphones, laptops, and toys. Quick refresher: the tariffs were supposed to become official in September - raising concerns that they’d impact Americans (negatively) during holiday shopping. Now, it looks like Trump’s saying ‘just in case’ and pushing the tariffs back to December 15. All of this comes during increasing fears of a recession. In other news, recently, Verizon - which bought Tumblr in 2013 for, oh, a billion dollars - sold the biz to the owner of Wordpress (a website building biz). For $3 million. Valuation, tumbling. And speaking of which, CBS and Viacom are getting back together.
POLITICS: Everyone’s talking about Hong Kong. Reminder: ever since China intro’d a new extradition bill, hundreds of thousands of people in Hong Kong have been taking to the streets to protest. And over the past few days, these protests continued to escalate. As in thousands of protesters headed to Hong Kong’s airport - leading the airport, one of the busiest in the world, to ground all flights. Now, after days of violent clashes and protests, it looks like the airport’s finally resuming flights. Meanwhile, yesterday, multiple top Dems called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to cut lawmakers’ vacations short so they can vote on two gun control bills. Think: universal background checks. No word yet on this from McConnell.
WORLD: All eyes are on the Taliban. Reminder: over the past week, the US and the Taliban have been talking peace. See: the US wants to pull troops out of Afghanistan - but they’ll only do so if the Taliban agrees to crack down on terrorism. Problem, since recently, the latest round of talks between the two ended early...with no deal. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, yesterday, 3 kids were killed after their family’s motorboat was hit by a huge wave off the coast of Normandy, causing it to capsize. And speaking of which, recently, an Israeli flight attendant died from measles after apparently contracting the disease from a passenger on a flight from New York. This comes as both New York and Israel are facing measles outbreaks.
