WORLD: Recently, a European intelligence official revealed that Russian intelligence officers offered cash rewards to Taliban fighters for killing US and UK troops in Afghanistan. You read that right. It’s not entirely clear why, but the European official says it led to casualties. It also came out that US intelligence apparently knew about the bounty for months - but the Trump team says Prez Trump wasn’t briefed on it. In other news, hundreds of people took to the streets in Taiwan - where the coronavirus outbreak has been mostly eradicated - for a public Pride parade.
CORONAVIRUS: Speaking of coronavirus, the global death toll just surpassed 500,000. Not a typo. This comes as cases continue to skyrocket in the US. Case in point: infections are up nearly 70 percent in the last two weeks, with just two states reporting declines. And in Florida, cases are up fivefold in the last two weeks. Now, it looks like Vice Prez Mike Pence is telling Americans that “wearing a mask is a good idea.” In other coronavirus news, it’s been revealed that more and more patients are experiencing hospital delirium. About two-thirds to three-quarters of patients in ICUs have dealt with things like hallucinations, agitation, visions, and extreme confusion. Stay tuned as more details come out about the long-term effects of this.
USA: Yesterday, a man - Steven Nelson Lopez - was charged with murder after fatally shooting a 27 year old man and injuring someone else. The shooting took place at a Louisville protest over the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman shot by police officers in her own home a few months ago. No word yet on Lopez’s motivation. Meanwhile, yesterday, Prez Trump retweeted a video of a man yelling “white power!” while riding a golf cart with “Trump 2020” and “America First” signs. Yes, really. The Prez faced instant backlash - and deleted the tweet not long after. Over in Mississippi, lawmakers voted to take a red pen to the stage flag, which features the Confederate flag. And in other news, more and more bizes are boycotting Facebook over hate speech. Think: Starbucks, Unilever...to name a few.
