THE HIGHLIGHTS

Lots of elections are taking place around the world.

THE HAPPENINGS.

We’ll remind you: last May, Malawi (as in the African country) headed to the polls. Andddd elected current Prez Peter Mutharika. Only a slight problem...just a few months ago, Malawi’s constitutional court axed Mutharika’s win due to apparent vote tampering. So the country cast their ballots all over again - and voted for Lazarus Chakwera, Mutharika’s opponent. Unprecedented, BTW. In response, Mutharika pointed fingers at the election for allegedly being filled with violence and irregularities. All the same, Chakwera and his vice prez were recently sworn in

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

Across the world in Poland, the country’s having a tricky election, too. As in none of the candidates snagged enough votes to take the win. Meaning Poland looks to be heading toward a runoff vote in two weeks between the current prez - Andrzej Duda - and the second-place finisher, Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. Breath, bated.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 3.

French Prez Emmanuel Macron’s having a rough time. See: his progressive-center party didn’t win a single major city in France’s second round of local elections. Who did have lots of big wins: the Green party and its left-wing allies. Big deal, since this could signal that France is moving farther and farther to the left.

SO…?

Elections are just as important as ever, even amid the pandemic. TBD on how the above elections change things.

THE ACTION

WORLD: Recently, a European intelligence official revealed that Russian intelligence officers offered cash rewards to Taliban fighters for killing US and UK troops in Afghanistan. You read that right. It’s not entirely clear why, but the European official says it led to casualties. It also came out that US intelligence apparently knew about the bounty for months - but the Trump team says Prez Trump wasn’t briefed on it. In other news, hundreds of people took to the streets in Taiwan - where the coronavirus outbreak has been mostly eradicated - for a public Pride parade

CORONAVIRUS: Speaking of coronavirus, the global death toll just surpassed 500,000. Not a typo. This comes as cases continue to skyrocket in the US. Case in point: infections are up nearly 70 percent in the last two weeks, with just two states reporting declines. And in Florida, cases are up fivefold in the last two weeks. Now, it looks like Vice Prez Mike Pence is telling Americans that “wearing a mask is a good idea.” In other coronavirus news, it’s been revealed that more and more patients are experiencing hospital delirium. About two-thirds to three-quarters of patients in ICUs have dealt with things like hallucinations, agitation, visions, and extreme confusion. Stay tuned as more details come out about the long-term effects of this.

USA: Yesterday, a man - Steven Nelson Lopez - was charged with murder after fatally shooting a 27 year old man and injuring someone else. The shooting took place at a Louisville protest over the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman shot by police officers in her own home a few months ago. No word yet on Lopez’s motivation. Meanwhile, yesterday, Prez Trump retweeted a video of a man yelling “white power!” while riding a golf cart with “Trump 2020” and “America First” signs. Yes, really. The Prez faced instant backlash - and deleted the tweet not long after. Over in Mississippi, lawmakers voted to take a red pen to the stage flag, which features the Confederate flag. And in other news, more and more bizes are boycotting Facebook over hate speech. Think: Starbucks, Unilever...to name a few.

WHAT TO KNOW

Lunar Loo:” NASA’s new challenge that asks people to help design a toilet for astronauts on the moon. Priorities.

SAY WHAT?

“This floating chicken farm could be the future of farming” - an actual headline. Eggceptionally weird.
