THE HIGHLIGHTS

Alex Jones is being held accountable for spreading lies about the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

THE BACKGROUND.

On December 14, 2012, a 20 year old named Adam Lanza opened fire on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. He killed 26 people, including 20 children between 6 and 7 years old. When first responders arrived at the school, Lanza turned his gun on himself. Sandy Hook is the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in US history and the fourth deadliest mass shooting overall.

THE DEETS.

Meet Alex Jones. He’s the far-right conspiracy theorist behind InfoWars. For years, he’s spread lies about the Sandy Hook shooting, alleging that it was all staged by the gov to get public support for gun control legislation. He even claimed that the families of the victims were complicit in the hoax - causing those families to face accusations, threats, and harassment.

THE HAPPENINGS.

One of those families decided to sue Jones, leading to a nine-days-long defamation trial. They took the stand to detail the suffering Jones caused. In his testimony, Jones conceded that the shooting was “100% real.” Now, it looks like a jury has weighed in…and ordered Jones to pay $4.1 million in damages. Expect jurors to decide whether Jones owes any punitive damages in addition to that $4.1 million in a separate phase of the trial today.

THE TAKE.

While far below the $150 million the plaintiffs were seeking, the jury’s decision marks a major step toward justice for the families of the victims of Sandy Hook.

THE ACTION

USA: Yesterday, the Biden team declared the monkeypox outbreak a national health emergency. Big deal, since this means that the virus now represents a significant health risk to Americans. It’s just the fifth such national emergency since 2001. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just suspended a prosecutor for vowing not to enforce the state’s new 15-week abortion ban and for supporting gender transtition treatments for minors. The prosecutor was elected by voters in 2016 and in 2020. Also making headlines: Georgia’s Dept of Revenue just announced that “any unborn child with a detectable human heartbeat” can be claimed as dependent - providing a $3,000 tax exemption for each pregnancy within a household. Yes, really.

PEOPLE: Recently, World Triathlon OK’d a policy that will let transgender women continue to compete in the female category - but under tighter restrictions. Think: trans women must show lower concentrations of testosterone continuously for at least two years. Plus they can’t have competed as a male in any sporting competition in the past four years. In other news, a Russian court just sentenced basketball star Brittney Griner to 9 years in a penal colony. The US claims that Russian officials “wrongfully detained” Griner on a drug charge. Meanwhile, 4 Louisville police officers involved in the raid on Breonna Taylor’s home were just charged with civil rights violations. Breonna Taylor, a Black woman, was killed in her own home when officers carried out a search warrant of the wrong place.

WORLD: China is not happy with the US and Japan. Reminder: earlier this week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi touched down in Taiwan in a major show of support for the island, which sees itself as independent from China. So China responded by firing 5 missiles into Japanese waters to the east of Taiwan. Experts say it sends a warning to both the US and Japan about supporting the island. Tension, high. In other news, yesterday marked two years since the port region of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, was rocked by an explosion that killed hundreds of people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. The area continues to face damage, with massive grain silos partly collapsing on the anniversary of the blast.
