WORLD: Over the weekend, a soldier in Thailand killed 29 people at a military base and shopping mall. The shooting reportedly started over a real estate dispute and led to the soldier opening fire on the military base before stealing a military vehicle and driving to a nearby mall. Law enforcement apparently tried to negotiate with the shooter - even bringing in his mother - but after hours of failed attempts, they eventually killed him. The whole thing lasted 18 hours. All of this comes in a country where shootings are relatively rare. In other news, recently, heavily-armed police and soldiers forced their way into El Salvador’s parliament to demand the approval of a $109 million loan that’d give them things like new uniforms and vehicles. Stay tuned.
DISASTERS: The Wuhan coronavirus has now killed more people than SARS, which took hundreds of lives in 2002 and 2003. The death toll is now at 910, with 97 people dying in a single day. Tens of thousands of people in multiple countries have been infected. Now, all eyes are on this cruise ship currently quarantined in Japan, where 135 people are confirmed to have contracted the virus. Meanwhile, right now, much of Europe is facing Storm Ciara, which is battering the UK and northern Europe with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains. Authorities are urging millions of people to stay indoors. The winds were so strong that they propelled this British Airways flight to reach New York from London in less than 5 hours - a new record.
POLITICS: Iowa is making things official. Recently, the state officially handed Pete Buttigieg the win in the Iowa caucus, the first election in the 2020 Dem primaries. This comes after lots of delays and a near-tie with Bernie Sanders. Now, all eyes are on New Hampshire, which heads to the polls tomorrow in its caucus. Meanwhile, the other day, Prez Trump said ‘you’re fired’ and ousted two witnesses in his impeachment trial, Gordon Sondland (the US ambassador to the EU) and Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman (the top Ukraine policy officer on the National Security Counsel) - plus Vindman’s twin brother, who wasn’t an impeachment witness. This came after the Trump team pinky promised “payback” against those who testified in the trial.
