THE HIGHLIGHTS

Wuhan is on lockdown.

THE BACKGROUND.

Last month, a mysterious new virus popped up in the city of Wuhan, China. The virus - dubbed the Wuhan coronavirus - has pneumonia-like symptoms and is giving the world flashbacks to SARS (aka Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed 774 people and sickened thousands across Asia in 2002 and 2003. Already, the Wuhan coronavirus has killed at least 17 people and infected nearly 600.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Chinese officials are taking action. Two cities - Wuhan and Huanggang - have gone into lockdown, with all transportation suspended. Wearing a mask is now mandatory, while people are being advised to stay away from crowds and gatherings. Restaurants, theaters, and exhibitions are being closed. The entire quarantine area is essentially equal to the New York metropolitan region. Think: about 20 million people.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

China’s not the only one. Soon, passengers traveling from Wuhan to the US will only be able to land at five select airports - with the airports taking extra measures to screen for the virus. And all of this comes as authorities and scientists point fingers at two species of venomous snakes sometimes sold in Chinese markets as being the virus’s origin.

SO…?

The Wuhan coronavirus is spreading very, very quickly. TBD on whether efforts to slow its spread will work.

THE ACTION

WORLD: Recently, one person was killed and 7 were wounded after a shooting in Seattle near Pike Place Market. Multiple people were reportedly involved in a fight when guns were pulled out and shots were fired. So far, no arrests have been made as its unclear exactly how many people were involved. Stay tuned. In other news, at least 3 American crew members were killed after a firefighting water bomber crashed in the Australian state of New South Wales. This comes as the fires continue to rage across Australia. And meanwhile, world leaders are expected to meet in Jerusalem this week for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Who won’t be attending: Prez Trump and Poland’s prez.

PEOPLE: All eyes are on the Senate impeachment trial. Hint: right now, Dems have a couple of days to make their case. And so far, they’ve shown a highlight reel featuring Prez Trump, mentioned Alexander Hamilton (who warned against people who might try to get elected to “pursue his own interests”), and accused the Prez of trying “to cheat” in the election. Now, everyone’s watching to see how Republicans lay out their case. Meanwhile, Eli Manning is retiring after 16 seasons of football. You know Manning as the New York Giants quarterback who’s won two Super Bowls and started 210 consecutive regular-season games. The Giants’ prez says Manning is “one of the very best players” in the franchise’s history.

HUMAN RIGHTS: We’ll remind you: The Washington Post (owned by Jeff Bezos) wasn’t exactly complimentary of Saudi Arabia after the country’s leadership allegedly ordered the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi. Fast forward to a few months later, and details of Jeff Bezos’ affair were leaked to the public. So the other day, digital forensics experts said ‘smells fishy’ and announced that the Saudi crown prince personally sent Bezos a WhatsApp message containing a file that transferred all of Bezos’ phone info to the Saudis. Now, United Nations human rights experts say they’re “gravely concerned” - and are calling for an investigation. In other news, Utah is banning conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ kids.

WHAT TO KNOW

Stress:” what is now scientifically proven to make your hair go gray faster. Gen Z is doomed.
