DISASTERS: The death toll in the Surfside, Florida, condo collapse has risen to 90. You read that right. About 40 people are stilllllll missing - nearly three weeks after the collapse occurred. Meanwhile, the other day, a fire at a juice factory in Bangladesh killed at least 52 people and injured 50 others. Now, the factory’s owner has been arrested, along with seven other people. Stay tuned. Speaking of which, as the US West fights a heat wave, fires have broken out in multiple states. In California, firefighters are working to contain a wildfire in Northern California that’s continued to grow. And in Oregon, the Bootleg Fire has more than tripled in size to 143,607 acres. Not a typo.
PROTESTS: ICYDK, Cuba is not exactly known for its protests. As in there haven’t really been any widespread demonstrations there in nearly 30 years. Scratch that, because yesterday, hundreds of people took to the streets in Cuba to protest food and medicine shortages. Tension, high. In other news, a cameraman was just killed after being attacked at an anti-Pride march in the country of Georgia. Over 50 other journalists were also injured by homophobic groups. Meanwhile, dozens were arrested in South Africa as people protested the imprisonment of ex-prez Jacob Zuma. The protests have escalated into violence, with some people carrying sticks, golf clubs, and branches. Now, authorities say criminals are taking advantage of the chaos.
CORONAVIRUS: Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about coronavirus booster shots. Case in point: Pfizer said a booster shot after six months “may be beneficial” - prompting a joint statement from the US Food and Drug Admin and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that said fully vaccinated Americans don’t need a booster. Now, Dr. Anthony Fauci is jumping in on the discourse...and saying there’s no immediate need for a booster if you’ve been vaccinated, but there could be in the future. In other news, a top right-wing Brazilian newspaper is demanding the resignation of Prez Jair Bolsonaro, who’s a right-wing nationalist. This comes as Bolsonaro’s faced increasing scrutiny over his response to the pandemic.
