THE HIGHLIGHTS

Here’s your daily coronavirus update.

THE HAPPENINGS.

The US coronavirus death toll just topped 70,000. Over in Washington, DC, the Trump team’s reportedly planning to wind down the Covid-19 task force over the coming weeks as more and more of the country reopens. Problem, since a new model says if every US state opened back up, the US could reach 350,000 deaths by the end of next month. 350,000. Meanwhile, the UK is overtaking Italy in the highest coronavirus death toll in Europe, with around 30,000 deaths.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

Everyone’s talking about Kawasaki disease. ICYDK, symptoms of a rare inflammatory condition have been spotted in over a dozen kids in New York City and Europe. Think: Kawasaki disease, which can cause a fever, rash, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. It also tends to pop up around epidemics - and mainly affects young kids. Cue concerns that it could be linked to coronavirus.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 3.

In some good news: Pfizer and BioNTech are set to begin human trials of its coronavirus vaccine. If it works, it could be available for emergency use by September. Speaking of vaccines - Dr. Rick Bright, who was kicked out of his job as director of the federal office in charge of developing a coronavirus vaccine, just filed a whistleblower complaint saying his early warnings about the virus were ignored.

SO...?

The whole world’s looking to the future of this pandemic. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

WORLD: Recently, Venezuela’s gov announced that it arrested 2 Americans on suspicion of plotting to overthrow Prez Nicolas Maduro’s gov. You read that right. The gov said it was able to stop an “invasion” from the sea, killing 8 assailants and capturing 2 others. Reminder: it’s no secret that much of the world isn’t a fan of Maduro - including the US, who’s on Team Guaido. That would be Juan Guaido, as in the opposition leader who swore himself in as prez. Now, Venezuela’s pointing fingers at Guaido for allegedly bankrolling the coup attempt. Meanwhile, a new study says the strength of Nazism between regions of Germany could be linked to the number of deaths from the 1918 flu pandemic in that particular area. Yes, really.

BIZ: The happiest place on Earth isn’t so happy. Hint: recently, Disney declared that its quarterly profit fell more than 90 percent. Not a typo. This comes as theme parks and cruise ships have been closed - which alone lost the biz about a billion dollars - and no new movies are being released. Stay tuned. Speaking of which, Airbnb is laying off 1,900 employees - or about 25 percent of its total staff. We’ll repeat: not a typo. This marks the first mass layoff at a tech biz since the coronavirus pandemic hit. And it’s not expected to be the last.

USA: All eyes are on the New York Dem presidential primary. Quick refresher: the only candidate who hasn’t suspended their campaign is former Vice Prez Joe Biden - which pretty much guarantees he’ll be the Dem nominee and go up against Trump in November. So add that to the coronavirus pandemic, and New York state decided to completely cancel its primary. Intro some backlash. Not to mention a lawsuit from former candidate Andrew Yang and a few New Yorkers. Now, it looks like a judge is siding with Yang and ruling that the primary will take place as planned. In other news, Joe Biden is demanding justice over the killing of an unarmed African American man who was jogging in Georgia. This comes after a prosecutor argued there was no probable cause to arrest the two men who shot him.

WHAT TO KNOW

X Æ A-12:” the name of Elon Musk’s new baby. Not anticipating this making the top 10 baby names list.

SAY WHAT?

“NASA is working with Tom Cruise to shoot a film in outer space” - an actual headline. Ethan Hunt has nothing on Tom Cruise.
