THE HIGHLIGHTS

A lot is going on when it comes to the coronavirus.

THE HAPPENINGS.

We’ll jump right into this. In Italy, the country is shutting down all non-essential retailers (think: everything except pharmacies, food stores, and banks). And over in Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel says she expects up to 70 percent of the population to become infected. Not a typo.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

In response to all this, Prez Trump said ‘everyone, grab your remote’ and took to your TV screen to give a PSA about the coronavirus. And announced that the US will be suspending all travel from Europe to the US for a month. Starting tomorrow. As of now, it looks like US citizens and permanent residents overseas will be exempted - plus the UK. The stock market wasn’t happy about all this. And...crashed. The US stock market is now in “bear market” territory - meaning it’s dropped 20% from its high, something that hasn’t happened in over a decade.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 3.

The US isn’t the only one suspending things. Over in the sports world, the NBA is halting all games after a player was reportedly infected. All. Games. So far, it looks like the NCAA will be continuing with their games - but will not be including fans. Over in Australia, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have tested positive for the coronavirus. And experts now say “social distancing” could be the best defense.

SO…?

The WHO has officially declared the coronavirus a “pandemic.” TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

PEOPLE: ICYMI, there’s been a lot of debate over equal pay in soccer. About a year ago, 28 members of the US Women’s National Soccer Team sued the US Soccer Federation (aka the USSF) for gender discrimination and unequal pay. The USSF responded that pay was based on revenue - to which a report said ‘ha no’ and revealed the women’s soccer games bring in more money than men’s soccer games. So fast forward to yesterday, and the USSF is now saying that they won’t pay female players equally because being a male player requires more “skill” and “responsibility.” Cue backlash. Speaking of which, the UK just said ‘nay’ to gender neutral markers on passports.

COURT: Yesterday, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison. You read that right. Reminder: years ago, dozens and dozens of women came forward and accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, sexual assault, and even rape. You’ve been hearing about the resulting trial a lot lately. A few weeks ago, Weinstein was found guilty of two felony sex crimes. Now, it looks like he’s being handed 23 years in prison. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is reviving that “Remain in Mexico” policy that forces asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their requests are heard. This comes after a federal appeals court recently blocked the policy for violating federal and international law. Not yet clear why the Supremes are bringing it back.

POLITICS: The other day was Big Tuesday. We’ll refresh your memory: Joe Biden was the big winner - while experts said Bernie Sanders’ chances of snagging the Dem nomination were looking slimmer and slimmer. Raising q’s of whether he may drop out of the race. Not so fast. Recently, Sanders grabbed the mic to announce that he’ll be staying in the race. This comes ahead of another debate this Sunday, where Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders will go head-to-head. Suspence, thick. In other news, Greenland and Antarctica are reportedly losing mass (read: ice) six times faster than they were in the 1990s. Because, climate change.
