THE HIGHLIGHTS

Nathaniel Woods was executed.

THE BACKGROUND.

Back in 2004, three police officers were killed during a drug bust at an apartment in Birmingham, Alabama. The police officers reportedly got into a “hostile, profanity-laced” argument with two men - Nathaniel Woods and Kerry Spencer - before threatening them. They showed up at Woods’ apartment later to serve him a warrant and arrest him for dealing drugs, but they were met with gunfire. Three of the officers were killed and one was injured.

THE HAPPENINGS.

In 2005, prosecutors pointed fingers at Spencer for opening fire - plus accused Woods of being an accomplice in the murders. Both men were convicted of capital murder and attempted murder...and sentenced to death.

THE REACTION.

Woods’ execution was scheduled for last night. But earlier in the day, the Supreme Court suddenly issued a temporary stay on his punishment - reportedly so the Supremes could review his case. Or not. Just hours later, the Supreme Court shook their heads to reviewing his case and lifted the temporary stay. Around the same time, Sen Doug Jones (D-AL) sent a letter to Alabama’s governor and asked her to delay the case - while Martin Luther King III, Kim Kardashian, and around 100,000 people who signed a petition called for his execution to be halted. Fast forward a few hours, and...the state went ahead with Woods’ execution.

SO…?

This isn’t the first controversial case involving the death penalty. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: All eyes are on the 2020 primary elections. We’ll give you the update: yesterday, Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) dropped out of the race. You read that right. ICYMI, Warren was once seen as a frontrunner in this race - but didn’t win a single state. Unclear which candidate - if any - Warren will throw her support behind and endorse. What is clear: the race has pretty much narrowed down to Bernie Sanders vs Joe Biden. Tension, high. In other news, recently, Russian Prez Putin and Turkish Prez Erodogan got together to talk Syria. Reminder: for years, the Syrian gov - backed by Russia - has been fighting rebels - backed by Turkey - in a civil war. Now, it looks like the two countries have reached a ceasefire

CORONAVIRUS: Everyone’s talking about the coronavirus. In the US, coronavirus cases jumped to 215, with worldwide cases nearing 100,000. At least 14 people have died of the virus in the US, with Washington, California, and Maryland under states of emergencies. Problem, since recently, Vice Prez Mike Pence declared there weren’t enough coronavirus test kits. Not good. Speaking of which, the stock market fell another 3 percent yesterday, with shares expected to keep dropping over the weekend. And in Japan, there were over a million tweets calling on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to resign for his response to the coronavirus. Hint: not responding...then suddenly shutting down schools. Stay tuned.

WORLD: ICYDK, federal investigators have been taking a magnifying glass to the United Automobile Workers union for yeaaaaars. Because, corruption. Yesterday, prosecutors kept the trend going and pointed fingers at a former U.A.W. prez for embezzling union funds. More than $1 million in union funds. The prez - Gary Jones - apparently used the money for things like fancy meals, golf outings, cigars, and clothing. No word yet on what comes next for Jones. Meanwhile, scientists have reportedly used a gene-editing tool to attempt to cure blindness by restoring light-sensing cells in the retina. Not yet clear on whether it worked. And in other news, a high-speed train derailed in France, leaving 21 people injured.

WHAT TO KNOW

$55 million:” how much you can pay to spend 10 days on the International Space Station in 2021. What a steal.

SAY WHAT?

“That’s not low, that’s clever” - Tom Holland after admitting he used to copy his friend’s homework…then turn it in first so his friend would be blamed. With great power comes no responsibility.
