THE HIGHLIGHTS

Health experts are warning about a growing “humanitarian” crisis in the US.

THE BACKGROUND.

Exactly 248 days ago, much of the US started shutting down and intro’ing new restrictions due to coronavirus. At the time, there weren’t a whole lot of infections (well, at least compared to now). It took three months for the US to reach one million cases, and by that point, there was a fair amount of talk about hitting a peak. Then the US saw another spike over the summer...and experts let everyone know another spike in winter was imminent

THE HAPPENINGS.

They were right. As in the US recorded an additional one million cases these past six days, bringing the country’s total to 11 million cases. We’ll repeat: one million cases...in six days. Cue new restrictions in states like Michigan and Washington, stay-at-home advisories in cities like Chicago, and mask mandates in states like North Dakota. There have also been increased calls for Prez Trump to, you know, actually talk to top health officials, which the White House chief of staff says he’s not willing to do because he doesn’t want to trigger the formal process of opening a transition to a new admin (in this case, Biden).

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

In some good news: early data shows Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine is 94.5% effective. Which is really, really, really good.

THE TAKE.
Dr Ugur Sahin from BioNTech says he expects things to return to normal by next winter. Until then, the world has to face this one.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Over the weekend, Prez Trump tweeted that Joe Biden “won because the Election was Rigged.” ICYMI, that’s the first time Trump’s appeared to acknowledge that Biden won - something the general public quickly realized. To which Trump clarified, “I concede NOTHING! We have a long way to go.” This comes as more of his lawsuits keep getting thrown out. Meanwhile, all eyes are on Belarus. Reminder: the country headed to the polls a few months ago...and seemingly elected Alexander Lukashenko, who’s been prez for 26 years and is known to be pretty authoritarian. Enter: nationwide unrest and claims that the election was rigged. Fast forward to last week, and an anti-gov activist was beaten to death by security forces. That sparked nationwide protests...which led to the arrest of around 1,000 protesters. Tension, high.

DISASTERS: Everyone’s talking about hurricanes. About two weeks ago, Hurricane Eta slammed into Nicaragua, killing at least 120 people, leaving countless missing, and displacing thousands. The storm was also especially devastating in Honduras and Guatemala, where dozens more people were killed. Eta is estimated to have caused at least $5 billion (yes, with a b) in damages in Honduras alone. (Here’s how you can help.) Now, it looks like the region could be facing another massive hurricane: Iota, which just strengthened into a Category 5 storm. That marks it as the most powerful hurricane of 2020 and the strongest ever recorded in November. Stay tuned.

PEOPLE: Lately, lots of people have sued the Boy Scouts (BSA) over apparent sex abuse. Problem, since states have statutes-of-limitations that put timelines on when people can take legal action against the BSA. So in early 2020, a few states said ‘hold up’ and passed laws extending their statute-of-limitations rules on sex crimes. Meaning Boy Scouts who were abused as children could have more time to file lawsuits. Now, it looks like the total number of sex abuse claims surpasses 82,000. In other news, a new study just found that kids who got antibiotics under the age of 2 were more likely to have several illnesses or conditions when they got older. Think: asthma, eczema, hay fever, weight problems, food allergies, obesity, and ADHD.

Robo-Wolf:” what some Japanese farmers are using to scare off bears. Beary clever.
