THE HIGHLIGHTS

All eyes are on Derek Chauvin.

THE BACKGROUND.

Last May, a video surfaced showing a white police officer - later identified as Derek Chauvin - driving his knee into a Black man’s neck. The man - George Floyd - could be heard repeatedly saying he can’t breathe, but the officer didn’t remove his knee for nearly 9 minutes. Floyd ultimately died. The death sparked a wave of Black Lives Matter protests and calls for social justice that didn’t let up for months.

THE HAPPENINGS.

The other day, jury selection for Derek Chauvin’s trial kicked off. But that’s not the only big news surrounding the trial. ICYMI, Chauvin faces manslaughter and second-degree murder charges. At some point, he also faced a third-degree murder charge...until it was dropped. Lots of people weren’t too happy about that, so an appeals court ordered the judge to reconsider. Fast forward to today, and the judge declared he’ll be reinstating the third-degree murder charge. Yes, really.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

Another highly-anticipated trial involving Black Lives Matter is making headlines. Over the summer, a journalist named Andrea Sahouri was pepper-sprayed and arrested by police while covering a protest, apparently for failing to disperse. The arrest got a lot of pushback from advocacy groups who argued Sahouri was rightfully doing her job. Now, it looks like a jury agrees.

THE TAKE.

Last summer, people protested. Now, the fight is being taken to court. TBD.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Recently, the Senate confirmed a string of Biden’s Cabinet nominees. Think: Merrick Garland as attorney general, Marcia Fudge as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and Michael Regan as head of the Environmental Protection Agency. Speaking of political figures, an aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just accused him of groping her. It’s the sixth accusation of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior against Cuomo, who denies everything. Meanwhile, yesterday, the House of Reps passed Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Now, it’s off to Biden, who’s expected to sign it imminently.

IMMIGRATION: Recently, newly-revealed internal records showed that thousands of migrant kids who crossed the US-Mexico border alone are being held in Border Patrol custody for over four days on average. Even worse: the facilities have been deemed unfit for kids. This comes as more and more unaccompanied minors are crossing the border. In response, the Biden team says there is “urgency” from the prez to fix the system. On that note: Prez Biden is reportedly planning to restart a program that’d let at-risk Central American kids come live with relatives in the US. He’s also looking to try to help improve situations in Central American countries as a way to prevent those border crossings in the first place.

WORLD: Reminder: after months of protests calling for more democracy, China intro’d a national security law that bans “treason, succession, sedition, and subversion” against China’s gov, which has control over HongKong. Cue a series of arrests and crackdowns that’ve changed Hong Kong as the world knew it. Now, it looks like China is taking things a step further. See: the country’s parliament just endorsed a plan to “improve” Hong Kong’s electoral system. Under these new changes, Chinese officials would have the power to pick “patriots” to run for office and govern the city. Over in Russia, the gov is slowing down Twitter over “banned content.” That includes info about protests in support of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who was recently imprisoned.

WHAT TO KNOW

MyHeritage:” a program that makes deepfakes of your dead relatives. Because that’s not creepy.

SAY WHAT?

“Trevor Noah's extravagant 'Late Late Show' entrance incurs the wrath of James Corden” - an actual headline. The girls are fighting.
