THE HIGHLIGHTS

Get ready to say Prez Biden.

THE BACKGROUND.

Over the past week, there’s been a lot a lot of talk about the 2020 US presidential election, in which Prez Trump faced off against Joe Biden. And on Saturday, after days and days of vote counting, we had a winner: Biden. The Dem candidate snagged Pennsylvania and Nevada and is currently leading in Arizona and Georgia. That’s right - former Vice Prez Joe Biden is now Prez-Elect Biden, and Sen Kamala Harris is now Vice Prez-Elect Harris. The two gave a victory speech the other night.

THE HAPPENINGS.

You probably saw those videos of countless people celebrating in the streets after the news came out. But you also probably heard about Trump’s total lack of any kind of a concession - and apparent plans to keep on fighting the results in court. As of now, it’s highly unlikely that any potential legal battles will change the results of the election, but that’s not exactly stopping Trump. It looks like some Republicans (Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham) are publicly backing him, while a couple others (Mitt Romney, former Prez George W. Bush) have said ‘congrats’ to Biden. Most have stayed mum.

THE DEETS.

Biden’s prepping to take office on January 20th, 2021. See: just recently, he revealed the list of people who will make up his coronavirus advisory board. He’s also looking to reverse many of Trump’s decisions (like ditching the Paris climate accord) ASAP.

THE TAKE.

The election is technically over, but expect to keep hearing about Trump’s response over the coming weeks.

THE ACTION

CORONAVIRUS: Cases are still skyrocketing around the world. The US saw its fifth day in a row where cases topped 100,000, with that number expected to hold or even rise as the pandemic worsens and flu season gets going. The UK, France, Japan, and Russia are also seeing a big spike in cases. Worldwide, more than 50 million coronavirus cases have been recorded. Not a typo. Intro even more restrictions and partial lockdowns. In some good news: Pfizer’s early data shows that its coronavirus vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease. If that number is accurate, it’d put the level of protection on par with things like the measles vaccine. Very very good, BTW.

WORLD: Bolivia’s going through a transfer of power. Quick refresher: Bolivia’s had kind of a rocky past couple years. In 2019, the country headed to the polls...and was met with reports of “clear manipulation” and “irregularities.” That sparked deadly protests, which caused the prez to flee the country and quit. So a couple weeks ago, Bolivia said ‘round two’ and held a new presidential election. The winner: Bolivia’s socialist leftwing party. Now, it looks like leftwing Luis Arce is officially prez. In other news, Turkey’s finance minister is saying ‘I’m out.’ Hint: the country’s been going through some economic problems lately, with the currency dropping and the economy collapsing. Stay tuned.

PEOPLE: Yesterday, legendary game show host Alex Trebek passed away at the age of 80, about a year and a half after revealing he had stage-four pancreatic cancer. You knew Trebek as the longtime host of ‘Jeopardy!’ who continued working until just ten days before he died. His death marked the latest public figure to pass away after a battle with pancreatic cancer, following John Lewis and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. People all over the country mourned the loss of Trebek following news of his death.
