THE HIGHLIGHTS

Yesterday was the State of the Union.

THE BACKGROUND.

Every year, the prez gives a big televised speech to Congress. Aka the State of the Union address. Think of it as a prez’s opportunity to gather his or her base and get his or her supporters excited for the future. And yesterday, Prez Trump took to the stage for his third SOTU address

THE HAPPENINGS.

A lot went down. We’ll give you the deets. Trump’s all about the economy. More specifically: tax cuts, the low unemployment rate, and his new trade deal with Canada and Mexico (cough, the USMCA, cough). Healthcare was also a focus, with the Prez chatting about legislation addressing surprise billing and prescription drugs. What else made headlines: Trump’s still a big fan of his tariffs on China. Plus his foreign policy in the Middle East. But he’s not a fan of socialism. Because, Venezuela. Rush Limbaugh (a conservative radio host) snagged the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Impeachment wasn’t mentioned. Trump appeared to ditch Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s handshake. Pelosi got back at him by appearing to rip up his speech. Mature.

THE REACTION.

Soon after, Michigan’s governor, Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), took the mic to give the Dem response. She was all about infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure. And said the gov needs to focus on fixing America’s roads, bridges, and waterways.

SO…?

Prez Trump’s reelection campaign is building momentum. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

USA: The Iowa caucus results are finally coming in. Quick refresher: Monday was the Iowa caucus - aka the official start of the 2020 Democratic primary election. Voters headed to the polls to nominate a candidate to face off against Prez Trump, with the results expected to be revealed by that night. Only a slight problem...it’s Wednesday, and a little less than three quarters of the votes have been revealed due to a technical meltdown. At the moment, Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders are neck and neck, with Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden pretty far behind. Stay tuned as more results come out. Meanwhile, Macy’s is closing 125 stores over the next 3 years and cutting 2,000 jobs. And in other news, Instagram brought in $20 billion in 2019.

HEALTH: The Wuhan coronavirus outbreak is getting worse and worse. Reminder: weeks ago, a mysterious new virus popped up in the city of Wuhan, China. The virus - dubbed the Wuhan coronavirus - has pneumonia-like symptoms and was giving the world flashbacks to SARS (aka Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed 774 people and sickened thousands across Asia in 2002 and 2003. But now, the death toll from the coronavirus is nearing 500, with 25,000 people infected. Many experts say the coronavirus outbreak is looking more and more like a pandemic. And in Japan, a cruise ship carrying 3,700 people was quarantined after 10 people tested positive for the virus. Not good.

WORLD: Yesterday, at least nine people - four of whom were under the age of 18 -  were killed after a group of gunmen opened fire on an amusement arcade in the Mexican city of Uruapan. The arcade is reportedly used by a gang to sell drugs, and investigators currently think the gunmen are rival gang members. Witnesses say the gunmen entered the arcade and asked to see two gang members before shooting those inside the arcade. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico just faced another dangerous earthquake. So far, no one appears to be seriously hurt. This comes as the island’s been hit with nearly a dozen earthquakes of a 5.0-magnitude or higher over the last month.

WHAT TO KNOW

Sand dunes:” what can apparently talk to and even push each other. What.

SAY WHAT?

“Florida police made a traffic stop and found a bag full of drugs fittingly labeled 'Bag Full Of Drugs’” - an actual headline. Oh, Florida.
