Welcome to the late edition 2 of the fortnightly My Journey 2 Freedom newsletter, "The Freedom Files." 

It has been an interesting two weeks, filled with lots of fulfilling work and purposeful busyness. I have found myself feeling really grateful to be in the place I'm in right now in my Life.

And then on Monday morning, I hurt my back. What many of you don't know, is that I had spinal surgery 14 weeks ago. I was suffering with awful sciatica which turned out to be two degenerated discs, one of which had herniated into my spinal column and sciatic nerve. After five months of alternative, conservative treatment I acknowledged that I was feeling worse, not better, and so went to see an orthopaedic surgeon.

An evaluation, set of x-rays and an MRI later and it was confirmed that he could see the problem, that it was unlikely to go away very quickly on it's own and that his recommendation was surgery. 

A long story short is that I took a few days, consulted with other specialists and then made the decision to have the surgery. The result was waking up with no more sciatic pain! The trade-off was that I needed to take a month off to lay on my back to rest and heal.

So you can imagine my frustration and fear when on Monday I reached down for something and in doing so, heard a "pop" and felt my piriformis and glutes clamp up. I've been in pain ever since.

The purpose of my story

I believe in sharing purposefully, so bear with me- there is an intention behind my sharing.

The challenge I face right now is that my body is giving me the indication that it needs rest and some care so that whatever is going on inside of me, can heal. AND I have lots of awesome work to get done. Can you see my dilemma?

Where do my commitments lie?

Am I committed to walking my talk and living an authentic, self-loving Life which involves NOT being a superhero and acknowledging my need for rest?

Or am I committed to perpetuating the subconscious belief I have that has run me for most of my Life, the one that says that I need to push through the pain, suck it up and be superwoman?

The choice I am making

I am choosing to listen to my body and make room for rest and self-love. In making this choice I am going to let some people down. And that isn't something that I want to do, however if I want to be there to do the work I'm so passionate about for many years still to come, then making the choice to look after myself and letting some people down along the way is the right choice for me, and likely, for them too. 

The impact of our choices

Through honouring myself and being honest with others about how I feel, just like I am doing with you now, I give them (and you) the permission to do the same. 

And so, I apologise for sending this mail a day later than I committed to. I do not apologise for taking the time to look after myself and get the rest I need.

Relevant to this is a short video I created recently about my learnings around the unconscious motivators that drive our daily decisions. It feels really relevant to me now as I face making more choices in the weeks to come that show that I Love, Accept, Honour and Respect my body's need for rest and care.

What drives the decisions you make every day?
 
As humans, 90% of our cognitive (and physical) functioning happens on an unconscious level. It’s automatic, it’s pre-programmed. We may think we’re making decisions based on the facts in front of us, but the reality is that a lot of the time we are not. Our unconscious programming is running the show, and it will continue to do so until we make the time to stop and question our motivations.

Today, make time to stop and check yourself. Get curious and ask yourself “What unconscious motivation is driving this decision?”
