(Hosea 10:12) Revival does not begin in groups, but with individuals. And revival is not connected as much to preaching as it is to praying. James Packer wrote of the coming of revival, “The Spirit works fast: godliness multiplies, Christians mature, converts appear. Paul was at Thessalonica for less than three weeks, but God worked quickly and Paul left a virile church behind him.” Indeed, our mighty God can do more in a moment than we can in a thousand meetings. The delay is not on His part, but on ours! Prayer is simple. The discipline of getting alone with God and shutting the world out is the challenge (Matthew 6:6). Preaching is not the difficulty, but preparing people to receive and respond to God’s Word is another story. We all must ready our hearts if we truly desire to see revival. Revival does not begin in groups, but with individuals. And revival is not connected as much to preaching as it is to praying. John Hyde became such a man of prayer that he became known to history as Praying Hyde. In 1904, he posed five questions to a group of prayer partners. The members of this Prayer Union agreed to “pray until the awakening comes.” These sobering questions continue to speak to me, and each of us must answer them for ourselves: Are you praying for quickening in your own life, your fellow workers, and in the church? Are you longing for greater power of the Holy Spirit, and are you convinced that you cannot go on without this power? Will you pray that you will not be ashamed of Jesus? Do you believe that prayer is the great means for securing this spiritual awakening? Will you set apart one half-hour each day to pray for this awakening? One of my spiritual fathers, Clarence Sexton, has often said, “Nothing is dynamic until it is specific. Nothing is real until it is personal.” It is time for us to get specific and personal in our prayers. If revival ever comes to our land, it will not come because of one man’s sermon. It will come because God’s people learn what it means to seek the Lord. Arthur T. Pierson said, From the day of Pentecost, there has been not one great spiritual awakening in any land which has not begun in a union of prayer, though only among two or three. And no such outward, upward movement has continued after such prayer meetings have declined. It is in exact proportion to the maintenance of such joint and believing supplication and intercession that the Word of the Lord in any land or locality has had free course and been glorified. We are about to see this principle at work in one of the great prayers of the Old Testament, but it is true in every generation. The first meeting of the New Testament church was a prayer meeting, and the mighty work of the Spirit came in the place of prayer (Acts 1-2). If revival ever comes to our land, it will not come because of one man’s sermon. It will come because God’s people
