We have 3 vacancies for the right people to join our small team at Koanga at our base near Wairoa in Hawkes Bay.
We have these roles available:

  • Seed Gardener
  • Tree Nursery Manager
  • Office Manager / Administrator / Bookkeeper

Koanga Institute is a small, charitable organisation committed to regenerative living through the act of preserving NZ’s heritage food plants. We are looking for people who will appreciate working in a small non-profit organisation doing good work and who are keen to be part of building a better, regenerative future.

SEED GARDENER: FULL TIME (40HRS)

We are seeking an enthusiastic and hardworking, full time seed gardener to join us. Seed growing is one of Koanga's core areas and we are excited to be able to expand our Gardening Team. We are looking for someone who is a quick learner and has a passion for growing plants, and wants to develop new skills and interests.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a 200-300 square metre seed garden under the guidance and support of the garden manager.

They must be:

  • physically fit
  • able to work in a team environment with good communication skills
  • show initiative and good observation skills
  • have good time management
  • be prepared to work outside in different conditions
  • be committed to using biological and regenerative methods.
Previous outdoor work/gardening experience is preferred.

Duties include the whole range of tasks required to grow plants to seed, from bed preparation through planting, maintenance, seed harvesting and processing, and including specialist tasks required for seed production such as roguing and selection. Monitoring and record keeping is also required. On the job training and support will be given for all aspects of the role.

This is a truly satisfying job that covers the whole growing process from seed to seed!

TREE NURSERY MANAGER (FULL TIME)

Our Heritage Tree Nursery is another core production area and an incredibly important part of Koanga’s work. We are seeking an enthusiastic and hard working Tree Nursery manager to join our team.

We are looking for someone who:

  • has experience of propagation,
  • has excellent organisational skills
  • is a good communicator
  • has aptitude and interest in teaching and sharing skills with others
  • is committed to using biological and regenerative methods
  • is physically fit and has experience of doing outdoor physical work in an efficient way in most weather

The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, managing and maintaining production in the Tree Nursery and for working with management on further development in this area.

This role covers all aspects of Heritage Fruit Tree Production from planning, through bed preparation, propagation, planting, care, maintenance and fertilisation, to digging, packaging and sending trees out to customers.

Formal qualifications are not required but relevant experience is essential.

OFFICE MANAGER / ADMINISTRATOR / BOOK KEEPER (30 HRS)

We have a vacancy for an experienced Office Manager / Administrator / Bookkeeper. This 30 hour per week post includes responsibilities in the areas of Administration, Customer Services, Shop sales, Education Administration, Bookkeeping and Office Management.

 The successful candidate will have:

  • strong all round administrative experience
  • excellent time management skills
  • experience in the use of xero or similar systems for accounts management
  • experience with some of our on-line tools such as  woo commerce
  • the ability to learn to use new online tech systems with ease
  • customer service experience
  • excellent interpersonal skills
Although our production areas are core to Koanga's work this role is incredibly important in keeping our systems running smoothly and is our main point of contact with customers.
