Kauai Shores Model Units - Kapaa, Hawaii

Shioi Construction, Inc. (SCI) was contracted by Kauai Shores Hotel to remodel three guestrooms; the King’s Room, Queen’s Room, and Maile Room. Each will serve as prototypes for modernizing the remaining 200 guestrooms.

The scope of work included replacing the bathtubs with shower units and bathroom vanities to floating vanities, adding bathroom glass doors, plumbing fixtures, and a mini bar. Additional scope of work included new carpet and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, new wallpaper, installing additional electrical outlets, patching drywall, re-painting and Bolon flooring for the lanais.

The main challenge SCI faced was having to complete the renovations within a rigid schedule of 4 weeks while tending to the demands of unforeseen existing conditions.

All guestrooms have been delightfully renovated with each having their own unique style. The King’s Room featured a mural depicting the Hawaiian Islands in the middle of a beautifully multi-layered ocean. The Queen’s Room showcased coconut trees between the head board to give the impression of sleeping under the stars on a relaxing coconut beach. The Maile Room had a modest design but boasted additional space with a kitchenette. SCI was pleased to have been part of the remodeling process and looks forward to Kauai Shores’ upgrading their guestrooms for tourist and locals to enhance their vacation experience.

The completion date was October 2022.

Pasha Buildings at Kapalama Container Terminal – Honolulu, Hawaii

Creative Partition Systems (CPS) was subcontracted by Albert C. Kobayashi Inc. to build 5 new buildings (an Administration Building, Marine Operation Building, Maintenance Shop Building, Breakroom Building and a Guard Shack) for Pasha Hawaii at the Kapalama Container Terminal.

CPS’ scope of work includes interior metal framing, proprietary metal roof trusses, DEFS, interior gypsum board, ACT and Hardie panels.

The most challenging aspect of this project was having to install 60’ long trusses that spanned across the Administration Building. These trusses were situated on nested metal tracks and studs on the CMU walls.

The team was proficient in installing the proprietary metal roof truss systems as this was the 3rd project in 2022 that required installation of similar magnitude. As a result, CPS was able to complete the Administration Building in June.

The plaster system used on the CMU walls were of the Direct Applied Finish System. CPS skillfully performed the detail plaster work for the exterior portion of the buildings as multiple EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam trims were used to allow for a smooth transition of the different color schemes and materials.

Currently, the Breakroom Building, Marine Operations Building and Guard Shack are 80% complete and the entire project including the Maintenance Building are expected to be finished on schedule and within budget.

The estimated completion date is March 2023.

Kauai Construction Career Day

More than 400 students in grades six through 12 from schools islandwide participated in the Kauai Construction Career Day in November at Kauai Community College to learn about the various careers in the construction industry.

Students participated in hands-on activities with the trades, operated heavy construction equipment, and learned from 40 exhibitors in Kauai’s building industry.

“Students got a glimpse of the opportunities available in construction,” said Laura Cushnie, the event’s co-chair and co-owner of Cushnie Construction. “We hope that the event will encourage those who are interested in a career in construction to take the next steps toward that path.”

Participating students received hard hats, safety goggles and earplugs to wear while circulating through the field of exhibits.

“We send our deepest gratitude to the more than 50 companies within the industry who sponsored the event, as well as our partners, volunteers and planning committee,” Cushnie said.

Hawai‘i Construction Career Days’ mission is to provide Hawai‘i’s youth with the insight into career opportunities available in the multi-faceted construction industry.

Robert E. Rask Community Service Award

Shioi Construction Inc. was honored to receive the Robert Rask Community Service Award at the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i's 65th annual meeting on December 1 for its support of a variety of nonprofit organizations, such as Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, the Alzheimer’s Association, Kawaihau Little Leaguers, Hale Halawai O Hanalei, Wilcox Health, and more.

The award is named for Robert Rask, who moved from Montana to Kaua’i and jumped head first into being part of the fabric of this island including long term commitments to many community organizations. It was noted in the award presentation that "Bob Rask was an electrical contractor and back in the day, his company did a lot of subcontracting work with Shioi Construction...we cannot help but think Bob Rask would be delighted with the committee’s choice."
