MUSC Urban Farm is an educational garden where students, faculty, staff, and the community come together to explore the connection between food and health through hands-on learning about the many varieties of vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown in South Carolina. The Lowcountry Food Bank is a clearinghouse for donated food products that are distributed to a network of nearly 300 member feeding agencies including soup kitchens, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries. During this volunteer opportunity we will be packing, cleaning, and sorting food while learning about food insecurity in our local community. Volunteer with us on Saturday, April 15th, from 9am-12pm! Please sign up through Appointment Manager via MyCharleston or by clicking the button below.

Alternative Break
Applications to be a 2017-18 Alternative Break Site Leader can be found here. Priority deadline is Monday, April 17th at 5pm in the Center for Civic Engagement. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all site leader sports are full. Applications will be accepted until September 2017.

Volunteer for Earth Day! Stewards of Hampton Park need your help to make the City of Charleston more beautiful! Three times a year, each of the raised flower beds in Hampton Park is refreshed with 500-800 freshly grown annuals. This year, the Stewards of Hampton Park have asked for students from the College of Charleston to volunteer with them on Earth Day, April 22nd, from 8:30-11:30am. To volunteer, please sign up through Appointment Manager via MyCharleston or by clicking the button below.

The Office of Sustainability at the college is hosting a Weigh the Waste series to educate students on food waste and to help dining services reduce food costs and improve menu planning. This series will take place on Wednesdays for breakfast, lunch and dinner in Liberty dining hall through the end of March. On March 27th in Marion Square, the Lowcountry Homeless Coalition and volunteers will meet to give out coffee and possibly pastries to those who may be experiencing homelessness in our community. They will be providing information packets, survival bags and potentially filling out needs assessments as well. To volunteer, please click here. The Teacher’s Supply Closet is currently recruiting volunteers for their upcoming free teacher shopping session! This session will run from Tuesday, January 31st –Tuesday, March 28th. Charleston County Parks is currently recruiting volunteers for upcoming spring and summer events such as Dog Washing at the Pet Festival, Recycling Ambassadors and Portable Climbing Wall and Amusement Ride Attendants at the Lowcountry Cajun Festival and Archery, Disc Gold and Paddlesport Assistants at the Charleston Outdoor Festival. One80 Place is in need of on call bike mechanics who don’t mind donating their time and knowledge to help with simple repairs such as flat tires and making adjustments. Meals on Wheels! The Charleston Area Senior Citizens and their Meals on Wheels (MOW) program are looking for volunteers to better the lives of seniors! They serve senior citizens who may be low-income, home-bound, and may have moderate to severe physical restrictions. Volunteer shifts can last anywhere from 2-4 hours. Caris Healthcare is a hospice agency that provides care to patients in the last six months of their life.  As a hospice agency, we strive to provide our patients with care that fits their individual needs while also providing grace and love. Our volunteers have done things such as taking patients outside to get some fresh air or even participating in tea parties with some ladies. The National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at MUSC is looking for volunteers to provide clinic- and telephone-based follow-up mental health services to adult rape victims in the tri-county area. This volunteer opportunity would be great for students interested in psychology, nursing, ob/gyn, or have an interest in helping individuals with the following problems under the supervision of a licensed psychologist: sexual assault, substance misuse, suicidal ideation, post traumatic stress disorder, general mental health and case management. They also have research opportunities for volunteers so they can get both clinical and research opportunities with this volunteer project. SC Thrive is looking for volunteers who would be willing to help them out during tax season! They provide free tax preparation for a single household with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $65,000 or less and a joint household with an AGI of $95,000 or less. They use an online program to plug in numbers, The Benefit Bank of SC, which is set up similar to Turbo Tax. Volunteers would walk clients through this system. Almost Home Feline Refuge is a non-profit cat sanctuary dedicated to the rescue of feral, stray, abandoned and abused cats. They have a safe, clean home refuge for approximately 100 cats in Mt. Pleasant, and yes, they always have cats up for adoption! Almost Home is looking for volunteers to help them with their daily feline responsibilities such as cleaning litter boxes, feeding, vacuuming, mopping, doing laundry and, of course, giving attention to the kitties. Ideally, a person could commit to one day a week for about 4 hours that day. To learn more about Almost Home, check out this article from Mt. The Shaw Community Center is in need of volunteers who can assist the elementary age school children with their homework assignments after school, Monday - Friday from 2:45pm-4:45pm. The Shaw Center is located at 20 Mary Street, about a block east of Meeting and close to the elementary school on the corner of Meeting and Mary. The Shaw Center welcomes students from the College of Charleston who might be available in the afternoons on a continual basis throughout the Spring semester.
