Statement on Medicaid Expansion Referendum Victory
Yesterday, 59% of Maine voters supported the expansion of Medicaid to 70,000 Maine residents. This referendum was taken to the voters after a small number of elected officials – led by the Governor – thwarted passage of this effort five times in the legislature.
In response to a statement by Governor LePage this morning indicating he won’t implement the law even after the vote, Sweet said, “The voters have spoken. Decisively. We will not stand for it. We will fight anything less than full implementation of Medicaid expansion to Mainers desperately needing healthcare.”
She went on to say, “After what we’ve experienced this year with Augusta politicians essentially ignoring the will of the voters, it is time for every Maine elected official to focus on listening to the voters their priority.”
Sweet continued, “Anything short of full implementation is a slap in the face to every Maine citizen who took the time to make their voice heard, and undermines our democracy.”
