CASCADING DISCLOSURE OF THE DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN BY THE WIRELESS INDUSTRY

For 25 years the wireless industry has denied the findings of independent science that show adverse health effects from wireless radiation. In a recent article in The Nation, Investigative journalists, Mark Hertsgaard and Mark Dowie uncover just how this was done. On Point Radio and Democracy Now follow up with fascinating and revealing interviews with author Mark Hertsgaard.

1. How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe: A Special Investigation The disinformation campaign—and massive radiation increase—behind the 5G rollout.   By Mark Hertsgaard and Mark Dowie  | Mar. 29th, 2018 | The Nation Thorough and very well-researched investigative piece that traces the history of how the wireless industry “war-gamed” independent science that showed health effects from wireless radiation thereby obfuscating the findings and leaving the public largely uninformed. https://www.thenation.com/article/how-big-wireless-made-us-think-that-cell-phones-are-safe-a-special-investigation

2. The Connection Between Cellphones And Cancer  On Point Radio, WBUR (Boston’s NPR radio station) |  April 5th, 2018
Podcast interview of Mark Hertsgaard, investigative journalist and co-author of the recent article in The Nation, How Big Wireless Made Us Think That Cell Phones Are Safe: A Special Investigation.

"Our piece [referring the recent article in The Nation Hertsgaard co-authored] is about the campaign that the wireless industry has mounted over the last 25 years…essentially to “war-game” the science as they put it, and to put their own science out there and essentially to obscure in the public mind what is the state of the actual science with regard to cell phones and cancer.”  Mark Hertsgaard

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL?

On March 23rd, HR 1625 - the omnibus bill - was signed into law.  The 2232 page bill is a compilation of dozens of pieces of legislation each used as a bargaining chip for one or the other party. While each party may have felt it won concessions, we, the people, lost out in at least one big way: Significant 5g fast-tracking legislation was escorted through. This is a link to the HR 1625. The Ray Baum’s Act of 2018 begins on page 1884 - ish.

Upon signing the Bill into lawl, President Trump stated:

"But I say to Congress: I will never sign another bill like this again.  I’m not going to do it again.  Nobody read it.  It’s only hours old.  Some people don’t even know what is in — $1.3 trillion — it’s the second largest ever." https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-signing-h-r-1625/

"'This is an abomination of the legislative process,' Hoyer thundered, holding up a bulky print-out as debate on the measure began. He invited any lawmaker who had read the entire bill to join him in the well of the House. No one did. Hoyer then admitted he hadn’t read the bill either."

“…the bill was not released until this Wednesday night, and a vote was forced on the bill in the House less than 20 hours after it was released. It is important to note that the bill – which practically no members outside of leadership had seen prior to its release – is 2,232 pages long."

WHAT’S NEW AT THE FCC?

On March 22nd, 2018, the Federal Communications Commission approved regulations that would largely eliminate environmental and historic reviews when siting “small” cells.  FCC Chair Pai, O’Reilly, and Carr approved. Commissioners Clyburne and Rosenworcel dissented.

Chair Ajit Pai says the FCC intends to remove many other “barriers” in the months to come in order to speed the deployment of 5g.

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai:

"You can stick with the regulatory status quo or you can have 5g. You cannot have both.”

Given this choice, I think most people would choose the “status quo”.

Resignation letter of Mayor Sam Liccardo from FCC's Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee (BDAC).

Liccardo explained why he felt compelled to resign:

"The apparent goal is to create a set of rules that will provide industry with easy access to publicly-funded infrastructure at taxpayer-subsidized rates, without any obligation to provide broadband access to underserved residents."

Another Top Official Quits the FCC’s Corrupt ‘Broadband Committee’
Another resignation from FCC’s Broad Deployment Advisory Committee (BDAC). In Jan. 2018, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo quit FCC’s Broadband Deployment Advisory Committee stating it seems to be working for industry interests and not the public. Now NY City's CTO Miguel Gamiño Jr. follows suit. According to Gamiño’s March 28th resignation letter to FCC Chair Ajit Pai, the New York official said that after participating in “100 hours of calls,” attending a full day in-person meeting in Washington D.C. and submitting “countless edits, drafts and comments,” he has determined that “despite good faith efforts by both the staff and members involved, the membership structure and meeting format of the BDAC has skewed the drafting of the proposed recommendations towards industry priorities without regard for a true public-private partnership.”

“5G” Wireless Is the New Fiber Optic, Bait-and-Switch Scandal
You can fool most of the people most of the time. With “5G”, you can fool almost everyone except those in on the joke.  Mar. 8th, 2018 | Bruce Kushnick | The Medium
Telecom Analyst and expert, Bruce Kushnick pierces through industry hype and gives context to this newest 5g “bait” which is but a repeat of many other similar “bait and switches” that came before. “This is just the latest in a long list of scandals by AT&T and Verizon to use the promise of a new technology to get rid of regulations, kill off competition and to raise rates. And this scheme relies on the FCC, not to mention their friendly state and federal politicians, to push it through.”

OPINION: FCC SET TO WASTE BILLIONS ON THE WRONG RURAL BROADBAND PROVIDERS  Mar. 20th, 2018 | Matthew Marcus | Institute for Local Self Reliance
Author Mathew Marcus explains why our captured government needs to stop throwing money at the “Big 4” - Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint - to “bridge the digital divide”. The private sector will just not deliver.
"These cooperatives are in rural areas for a reason — elected leaders recognized nearly 100 years ago that the private sector would not build essential infrastructure in rural areas and it would be wasteful to throw federal dollars at them. Instead, they created locally accountable organizations to build and maintain the electric grid and later telephone lines at high-quality and affordable rates.”

Commentary: These same cooperatives are the ones we can rely on to build out FAST, SAFE, RELIABLE, ENERGY EFFICIENT AND CYBER SECURE FIBER TO ALL HOMES! http://www.dailyyonder.com/opinion-fcc-set-waste-billions-wrong-rural-broadband-providers/2018/03/20/24578/

FCC approves SpaceX’s ambitious satellite internet plans Starlink is well on its way to serving customers on Earth Mar. 30th, 2018 | Nick Statt | The Verge
"FCC approves SpaceX’s ambitious satellite internet plans....SpaceX co-founder and CEO Elon Musk has been discussing a micro-satellite constellation for providing broadband internet for years, and in 2017 the company began accelerating its efforts by meeting regularly with the FCC and applying for a license that would allow it to operate in an unused portion of the FCC-regulated broadband spectrum. The company plans to call the service Starlink." https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/29/17178126/spacex-satellite-broadband-internet-fcc-approval-license-starlink-spectrum

STATE LEGISLATiON

4G/5G small cell bills were tabled in both Maryland and Georgia, at least for the time being. The reason for these bills being withdrawn  is not entirely clear. In Maryland, it seems that Senator Middleton realized the wide scope of the bill and felt that there would not be enough time in this years’ legislative session to address all the issues. Perhaps it was felt the state bills were no longer necessary given the passing of the Ray Baum legislation at the Federal level. Whatever the reasons were, the people of both Maryland and Georgia are reveling in their momentary victories.

Are mini-cell phone towers a health risk in your neighborhood?  April 6th, 2018 | Scott Taylor | ABC News
Overview of the Maryland State Bill that was withdrawn

NTP STUDY FINDS “CLEAR EVIDENCE” OF CANCER

"Clear Evidence of Cancer" Concludes U.S. National Toxicology Program Expert Panel on Cell Phone Radiation.  Scientific panel advises there is evidence for an association between both heart and brain cancers and cell phone radiation in large-scale animal study  Mar. 30th, 2018 | SB Wire
“Scientists concluded there is "clear evidence" linking cell phone radiation to the development of cancers in rats. The U.S. government invited an expert panel to make a majority-rules declaration in response to the $25 million U.S. government National Toxicology Program (NTP) study of cell phone radiation in animals. After a three-day review of the study data, they voted to strengthen the conclusions that cell phone radiation caused health effects in the cell phone radiation exposed rats and mice.“

HOW MUCH BETTER IS FIBER...LET ME COUNT THE WAYS

"Fiber is faster, safer, more reliable, and far more energy efficient and cyber secure than wireless"

The only advantage of wireless over wired is mobility. If we reserve wireless ONLY for applications that require mobility, and use wired for everything else, we can eliminate the “need” for 5g.

Following are some resources on the benefits of fiber.

How Local Governments Can Provide Network Neutrality, Privacy, and Access for All  ACLU Mar. 2018
"Hundreds of cities, towns, and counties around the country have already turned to community broadband, often providing faster and cheaper service than for-profit telecoms. And, municipally-owned broadband providers can honor net neutrality and privacy values, regardless of what the FCC does or doesn’t do. With these public systems, communities can ensure that internet service is provided in an equitable way.”.

Editor’s Corner—Fixed 5G was tested by the cable industry, and it came up a bit short  Nov. 8th, 2017 | Mike Dano | Fierce Wireless
Fixed wireless is Internet access at a set location, such as your home or business (as opposed to MOBILE wireless where you can connect to the Internet while on the go). Fixed wired is fiber or cable in a set location.

Tech companies are hoping 5g will supplant fiber-to-the- home...obviously, a far worse option for customers (and wildlife) as fiber is safer, faster, more reliable, and far more energy efficient and cyber secure than wired.

This article discusses a new report titled, "Can a Fixed Wireless Last 100m Connection Really Compete with a Wired Connection and Will 5G Really Enable this Opportunity?” The report seems to conclude that for the time being, fixed wireless doesn’t cut it when compared to fixed wired.

Good report to share with government officials and with municipalities to debunk 5g hype, and to encourage municipally owned fiber-to-the-home.

Cooperatives Connect Rural America  Mar. 20th, 2018 | Matthew Marcus | Institute for Local Self-Reliance
Excellent article about why fiber in rural areas should be built by rural communities rather than throwing billions at the “Big 4” who will never deliver.

Author Mathew Marcus explains why our captured government needs to stop throwing money at the “Big 4” - Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint - to “bridge the digital divide”. The private sector will just not deliver.“Rural communities have already proven that cooperatives are the way to get good, fast Internet access to underserved areas. So why are AT&T and other big corporations in line to get $2.5 billion in government funding to reach customers – again.”
http://www.dailyyonder.com/opinion-fcc-set-waste-billions-wrong-rural-broadband-providers/2018/03/20/24578/

The following article deliciously and exquisitely details why 5g is not at all a viable substitute for fiber.

5G Is Not the Answer For Rural Broadband

5G wireless, due to begin rolling out in 2020, will improve mobile broadband and support the internet of things. It may even be suitable for fixed broadband in dense urban areas. But it has neither the capacity nor the cost-effectiveness to address the rural fixed broadband gap.  Mar. April, 2018 | Larry Thompson and Warren Vande Stadt |Vantage Point Solutions
"As the 5G wireless network is more expensive for the initial capex (capital expenditure) as well as opex (operating expenses) and provides 1 percent of the broadband speed and capacity available on an FTTP network, it is unlikely to be a good investment if used only for fixed broadband services. There may be some select scenarios for which it makes economic sense, but one would expect those scenarios to be limited."

"But to deliver the high speeds and high capacity that many hope for, 5G requires a deep fiber network very similar to FTTP. When one puts fiber so deep into a network, why stop at the small cell rather than at the premises a few hundred feet away? Fiber to the premises allows much higher speeds and availability without the same kinds of capacity limitations. "

"Future 5G wireless networks will probably use wireless only in the last 300–500 feet. This is the scenario we consider here and compare with fiber to the premises." http://www.bbcmag.com/2017mags/Mar_Apr/BBC_Mar17_5GNotAnswer.pdf

Hundreds of Cities Are Wired With Fiber—But Telecom Lobbying Keeps It Unused. Government buildings all around the country are wired with fiber, but agreements with huge telecoms keep it out of people's homes.  June 14th, 2014 | Jason Koebler | Motherboard
Throughout the country, companies like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, CenturyLink, and Verizon have signed agreements with cities that prohibit local governments from becoming internet service providers and prohibit municipalities from selling or leasing their fiber to local startups who would compete with these huge corporations.
What happens then are so-called ‘middle-mile’ projects, where government buildings, schools, and nonprofit groups can be wired up, but expanded access to consumers is met with stiff lobbying opposition and threats from larger ISPs.”

QUOTES ABOUT FIBER

“Because broadband networks and the Internet have become vital components of our nation’s physical, cultural and social structure, the future of these networks, the report says, must be steered towards the fastest, most reliable and future-proof, and secure infrastructure available. Such infrastructure would be wired, not wireless.”  Dr. Timothy Schoechle
https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180126005137/en

'“I recommend deploying local fiber-optic networks everywhere. All municipalities in North America should put their own fiber networks in.”  Timothy Schoechle
https://maisonsaine.ca/english/municipal-fiber-optic-networks-are-the-future-home-automation-expert-says.html

“The United States is planning its future broadband infrastructure. Public input asking for safe, secure, reliable, extremely high speed, and energy efficient is needed. Fiber optic broadband delivers all these. Support Fiber Optic Broadband.”
http://www.electricalpollution.com/FundFiberNOTWireless.html

“Conclusion: Wireless Is Not a Substitute for Wireline Cable TV, Internet or Even DSL, Much Less a Fiber Optic-Based Service.”  Bruce Kushnick

“Fiber is faster, safer, more reliable and far more cyber secure and energy efficient than a wireless connection.” Ronald M. Powell (Ph.D.)

“…fed up with federal apathy and sick of being held back by lousy internet access controlled by local cable monopolies, scrappy cities around the US are working hard to find ways to get cheap, world-class fiber-optic connectivity. It’s always been an uphill climb, as the ‘incumbents’—giant carriers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T—are constantly working behind the scenes to block competition. (Recently, Comcast spent nearly $1 million opposing a municipal-fiber vote in Fort Collins, Colorado.” Susan Crawford, Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard
https://www.wired.com/story/koch-brothers-are-cities-new-obstacle-to-building-broadband/

"Why do we still not have a fiber optics system if we paid for it in our rates? Bruce Kushnick has spent decades following Telecom/FCC actions with regard to fiber. He has an in depth understanding of how consumers have paid out billions in rate increases for fiber optic networks that Telecom never delivered on. Furthermore, the FCC has been completely complicit and has turned a blind eye to Telecom’s shoddy accounting and broken promises.” Link to video lecture and book by Bruce Kushnick: http://scientists4wiredtech.com/regulation/kushnick-primer/

"What most people don’t realise is that we don’t really use cellular for delivering data to mobile devices.  More and more of the time, laptops and phones will preferentially connect to a Wi-Fi network,”  https://www.nickhunn.com/qualkia-constructing-the-5g-myth/#respond

"As Wi-Fi coverage is becoming more and more widespread, rather than attempting to move devices from Wi-Fi to 5G, it would make more sense for the industry to concentrate on integrating more services over Wi-Fi, allowing them to better focus cellular spectrum on when and where it’s most needed.“ https://www.nickhunn.com/qualkia-constructing-the-5g-myth/#respond
"William argues that network operators and regulators need to understand that circumstances and technology limitations have conspired to produce a 'Wi-Fi First’ world, where Wi-Fi is set to be the primary method by which mobile devices and smartphones will access data, wherever it is available.  They will only revert to cellular data when they have no Wi-Fi coverage.“  Nick Hunn https://www.nickhunn.com/qualkia-constructing-the-5g-myth/#respond

In fact, many experts view the cyber-world of information and computer technologies (ICT) as our potential saviour, replacing many of our physical activities with a lower-carbon virtual alternative. That is not what our study, recently published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, suggests.

"The wireless industry dreams of deploying its new 5G (fifth generation) infrastructure in your neighbourhood soon, as it has begun doing in California. Boxes the size of a PC could be placed every 150 meters or so on utility poles, sometimes with small-refrigerator-sized boxes on the ground. 5G technology uses pulsed, millimeter-sized microwaves that are easily blocked by obstacles such as leaves, hence the need to install millions of cell signal boosters near homes."

Digitropolis: Exposing The Dark Side of #IoT & #5G Full Documentary Multi Dutch+English Subtitles  Mar. 20th, 2018 Digitropolis is an insightful documentary about the ways that 5g and the IoT will profoundly impact our world. Digitropolis weaves together a dark tapestry that includes health, privacy, the ethics of AI, cyber security, loss of democracy, humans merging with technology, who will control, and how we can ensure our future.

"Every day we hear how the digital infrastructure made possible by 5G, the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence makes our lives especially easier, more fun and more efficient to make. The future society will be hyper-connected and completely Smart; everything around us collects and records data that ultimately benefits our health, safety, wallet, and protection against terrorism.

At least that is what governments and multinationals want us to believe. According to them, this new religion of algorithms and big data is the only salvation of humanity. That this is at the expense of health, privacy and the safety of the individual remains unspoken."

The New Frontier of E-Carceration: Trading Physical for Virtual Prisons  Mar. 22nd, 2018 | Stephanie Lacambra | Electronic Frontier Foundation
Criminal justice advocates have been working hard to abolish cash bail schemes and dismantle the prison industrial complex. And one of the many tools touted as an alternative to incarceration is electronic monitoring or “EM”: a form of digital incarceration, often using a wrist bracelet or ankle “shackle” that can monitor a subject’s location, blood alcohol level, or breath. But even as the use of this new incarceration technology expands, regulation and oversight over it—and the unprecedented amount of information it gathers—still lags behind.

Six top US intelligence chiefs caution against buying Huawei phones  Feb. 13th, 2018 | Sarah Salinas | CNBC

   • The directors of the CIA, FBI, NSA and several other intelligence agencies express their distrust of Apple-rival Huawei and fellow Chinese telecom company ZTE.

    • During a hearing, the intelligence chiefs commended American telecom companies for their measured resistance to the Chinese companies.

    • Huawei has been trying to enter the U.S. market, first through a partnership with AT&T that was ultimately called off.

Commentary: "This is a challenge I think that is only going to increase, not lessen over time for us," said Adm. Michael Rogers, the NSA's director.

Solution: If you’re concerned about inviting the Chinese or any other nationality into your living-room, don’t buy into the Internet of Things!!

TAKE ACTION

Colbeck cites health as reason to slow 5G rush  Mar. 15th, 2018 State Senator Colbeck from Michigan is the first senator to take on the adverse health effects of RF. He reminds his colleagues that their primary duty is to safeguard public health and not succumb to the “economic potential” of 5g and the IoT.

Precious few legislators dare approach the politically charged issue of the health effects from wireless technology. Senator Colbeck does.

Despite the convenience and the enormous economic growth potential associated with the Internet of Things our primary concern as legislators is not convenience, nor economic growth. As much as I love technology as per our Michigan constitution the public health and the general welfare of the people of our state are supposed to be our primary concern".

Important Letter to Zoning Committee on Their Responsibility to Protect Public Rights and Not Hide Behind Federal Laws That Can Harm Us  Feb. 2018 | Ron Kostoff | www.whatis5g.info

Letter by Dr. Ronald N. Kostoff written to the Montgomery County Zoning Committee. Dr. Kostoff strongly admonishes the County to protect public rights EVEN WHEN THESE ARE IN CONFLICT WITH FEDERAL LAW – in this case, with Section 704 of the 1996 Telecommunications Act. The arguments presented are compelling and should be brought before every public official making decisions relating to the deployment of 4G/5G “small” cells.

Message and Comments from Ronald N. Kostoff on Maryland Bills SB 1188 and HB 1767, Wireless Facilities – Permitting and Siting  Mar. 2018 |www.whatis5g.info
"How would these politicians react if one of the major airlines introduced a fleet of new transport planes that had never been flight tested?  Would they participate in the inaugural flights? Would they volunteer members of their family to participate in the inaugural flights?  Analogous to what they are proposing for 5G and its infrastructure, would they mandate that their constituents participate in the inaugural flights?  If not, why are they willing to mandate the imposition of 5G and its infrastructure on their constituents?”

The comments Dr. Kostoff are equally forthright:

These bills "would be a major contributing factor to the onset of myriad serious diseases, and would result in far more suffering and premature deaths than the mass shootings that capture our attention in the media."

Trump administration rolls back protections for migratory birds, drawing bipartisan condemnation

The Trump administration’s environmental rollbacks have sparked a lot of outrage. But one recent action by the Interior Department drew unprecedented protest from a bipartisan group of top officials who go all the way back to the Nixon administration: a new legal opinion that attempts to legalize the unintentional killing of most migratory birds.

Honey bees navigate using magnetic abdomens  Mar. 27th, 2017 | Hamish Johnston | Physics World
"Honey bees appear to sense magnetic fields using a magnetic structure in their abdomens, according to a team of physicists and biologists in Canada.”

The scientists showed that "ferromagnetic material consistent with magnetite exists in the abdomen of honey bees. They found that the material can be magnetized using a strong permanent magnet and that magnetizing the abdomen of a live honey bee disrupts its ability to navigate using local magnetic fields."

Commentary: Though the author didn’t connect the dots between magnetite and magnetic fields, the following article does discuss the impacts of electromagnetic fields on bees.
https://physicsworld.com/a/honey-bees-navigate-using-magnetic-abdomens/

The honeybee has existed on earth for about 40 million years. It is threatened to become extinct within only one decade!  World Foundation for Natural Science
“...technological electromagnetic radiation not only influences the immune system, it also interferes with the natural terrestrial magnetic field. Bees can detect the direction and change of the earth’s magnetic field, using this ability for their orientation. But when the natural terrestrial magnetic field is constantly superimposed with technological radiation they lose their sense of orientation and cannot find their way back to their hives."

"Bees also use electromagnetic fields to communicate with each other. When a food source is located at a distance of more than 100 meters from the beehive, the bees use the so called waggle dance in order to indi- cate to each other the direction and distance to good food sources. Using tiny magnetite crystals in the abdomen, they are able to in- duce frequencies between 180 Hz and 250 Hz. Mobile phone data transmission works with a high-frequency carrier signal modu- lated with a pulsed low-frequency signal. This pulsed signal has a frequency of 217 Hz and lies exactly within the range of the waggle dance, which is yet another interfer- ence with their natural communication.”

A Giant US Retail Corporation Just Filed a Patent For Autonomous Robot Bees  Mar. 15th, 2018 | Leanna Garfield | Business Insider
In search for a solution to the huge decline in bee population, humans have come up with Robobees. Common sense is now on the endangered list!!

"Harvard University researchers introduced the first RoboBees in 2013. At the time, the bee-size robots could only fly and hover midair when tethered to a power source, but they have advanced since then. Today, the RoboBees can also stick to surfaces, swim underwater, and dive in and out of water.

The researchers believe these RoboBees could soon artificially pollinate fields of crops – a development that would help offset the yearly bee losses over the past two decades.”

Commentary: The depths of depravity....So sad - so profoundly sad.

Internet of Things – Formula for a Global Trance  Mar. 28th, 2018 | Jon Rappoport | Activist Post
Musing about how life will be in an IoT world, Rappoport offers, “You will become e a spectator. Passivity IS hypnosis. Why would you care about what’s happening beyond your bubble? As long as 'functions are functioning,' all is well.
Of course, as you enter a decline in health, owing to the introduction of wireless 5G, the harmful technology necessary to implement IoT, and as your home devices spy on you and register your ‘symptoms,' there will be mandatory doctors’ visits. But don’t worry, you won’t have to leave your house. The diagnosis will occur on a screen in your hand, and the toxic medicine will arrive at your door. These drugs will make you more passive."

AI MANIA

A.I. will be 'billions of times' smarter than humans and man needs to merge with it, expert says  Arjun Kharpal |Feb. 13th, 2018 | CNBC |

    • Artificial intelligence could be "billions of times smarter" than humans and people may need to merge with computers to survive, a futurist told CNBC on Tuesday.

    • Ian Pearson, a futurist at Futurizon, said there will need to be a link between AI and a human brain.

    • Elon Musk said last year that humans must merge with machines to not be irrelevant in the age of AI.

Commentary: Let's hope that if AI is, in fact, so much smarter than humans, it will have enough "common sense" to not "merge with" us!!

Will the Future Be Human?  Jan. 25th, 2018 | Yuval Noah Harari | World Economic Forum
Whoever controls the data will control the future.
"Most people when they hear the talk about regulating data, they think about privacy, about shopping, about companies...corporations that know where I go and what I buy. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are much more important things at stake. So the discussion has hardly begun and we cannot just expect instant answers. We had better call upon our scientists, our philosophers, our lawyers, even our poets - or especially our poets - to turn their attention to this big question: How do you regulate the ownership of data? The future of not just of humanity, but the future of life itself, may depend upon the answer to this question.” Yuval Harari

CYBER SECURITY AND PRIVACY

Cost Of Ineffective And Uncoordinated Action On Cyber-risks Continues To Rise Mar 6, 2018  Bloomberg
"In 2015, Zurich Insurance Group and the Atlantic Council warned that the annual costs of cyber disruptions was beginning to outweigh the benefits of doing business in a connected world and that a failure to act could have a USD 120 trillion impact on global GDP by 2030. That prediction is already beginning to look conservative, as the cost of cyber-attacks rises and the risks multiply."

Commentary: The cost of cyber attacks and cyber security must be factored in when assessing projected profits from the IoT. Needless to say, if we add in other costs such as health, environment, e-waste, etc. we find the externalized costs of the IoT are astronomical. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/sponsors/zurich/cost-of-ineffective-and-uncoordinated-action-on-cyber-risks-continues-to-rise/?adv=6712&prx_t=Z3QDAAAAAAFEANA

How much info is Google getting from your phone? Feb. 7th, 2018 | Tucker Carlson | Fox News

Surveillance capitalism disclosed. "Google doesn't have a camera in every home, but it does have a phone - and tracking mechanism - in millions of pockets.” The reporters analyzed data gathered from two phones - one in airplane mode, and both lacking a SIM card, and not set up to connect to the Internet. Fascinating and disturbing how granular the data gathered was. Video concludes:

"Remember, when you're using a 'free' online service, you're probably not the customer, you're actually the product.”

US CONFLICT MINERALS LAW  Section 1502 of U.S. Dodd Frank Act: the landmark US law requiring responsible minerals sourcing  Briefing Nov. 15th, 2017 |
“The trade in natural resources finances conflict and human rights abuses all over the world. For decades the trade in minerals, precious stones, and other commodities has played a central role in fuelling some of the world’s most brutal conflicts and weakening already fragile states. Global Witness has exposed links between abuses, fighting, and this trade in the Central African Republic, MyanmarAfghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and elsewhere."

Commentary: If this situation remains unresolved, there will likely be an enormous increase in violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the move to 5g and the IoT.

E-WASTE

Kate Becker: Where do satellites go when they die?  Mar. 29th, 2018 | Daily Camera
SATELLITES:  While small satellites burn up in the atmosphere, operators prefer to steer larger, still-functioning spacecraft into remote parts of the ocean. The solution? There are proposals for laser brooms, space nets and air puffers that would capture debris or otherwise shuffle it off to safety, though commenters have noted that some of those schemes look a lot like anti-satellite weapons. A more practical solution to the problem, for now, is to minimize how much new debris we create, and try not to put anything into orbit without a plan to get it down again.
