Letter from the President

Dear SMANA members,

It was wonderful seeing many of you at the World Social Marketing Conference in Washington, DC in May. It was a busy conference--SMANA honored North American social marketers for their contribution to the field and the SMANA board held its first strategic planning meeting. Check out the North American award winners in the SMANA Events Recap section below, and stay tuned to learn more about SMANA's strategic plan in our next newsletter.

If you weren't able to attend the conference, I hope we see you at an upcoming SMANA networking event. Research shows that you are happier when you have social support from friends and colleagues. Unplug and network with other behavior change agents in your city who are working to solve some of society's biggest issues. See a list of events in the SMANA 2017 Networking Events section below.

SMANA is turning one! As we celebrate our one-year anniversary, some of you will receive an email to renew your annual membership. As always, email us if you have questions, comments, or want to get involved in making SMANA the best organization for you to advance behavior change for social good!

SMANA is partnering with the American Public Health Association (APHA) to declare 2017 the Year of Climate Change and Health. Join us in driving action to address the rising rates of climate-related health issues like asthma and allergies, respiratory disease, cholera, Zika, malaria, dengue, and more. Help spread the word by sharing messages and materials from APHA's digital toolkit on your social media!

Meet an External Affairs Committee Member:
Danielle Lewald is a Master of Public Health candidate with a concentration in social marketing at the University of South Florida. In addition, Danielle is a Project Consultant at the Florida Institute for Health Innovation where she supports projects focused on improving children’s oral health and engaging health professionals in climate resilience efforts in South Florida. She helps cultivate and craft content for the SMANA newsletter. We're looking for witty writers and MailChimp gurus to join the newsletter team! 5th World Social Marketing Conference and Award Ceremony

Global thought leaders, practitioners, academics, policy makers, and researchers came together from May 16 to 17 in Washington, DC to exchange ideas and best practices during the world's largest gathering of behavior change professionals.

During the conference's awards ceremony, we were pleased to present the North American Highest Achieving awards to people from across the region who have paved the way for social marketing's future. The following individuals are active SMANA members and leaders in the industry. We thank them for their support and their unwavering commitment to advance behavior change for social good.

Our featured expert is Mike Newton-Ward, an accomplished social marketer with 20 years of experience incorporating social marketing approaches to state, federal, and international government and nonprofit organizations. He is also one of the founding members of SMANA.
