Hadley’s Art Prize

What a wonderful outcome for the artist Peter Mungkuri from Indulkana winning the $100,000 inaugural Hadley’s Art Prize!  There were 11 indigenous works in the 41 finalists and this surely puts Aboriginal art in an elevated position.  Congratulations Peter.

NATSIAA Darwin

I’d normally give the sponsor a plug but we have frustratedly waited over 4 months for an increased speed for our NBN internet access.  Stratum title addresses seem to bother Telstra.  But they are sponsoring the 34th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Awards and it will be another momentous event.  Mick Quilliam’s featured ochre work missed out on being selected but sold immediately. The Darwin Art Fair showcases art from many art centres and hosts great performances.  It’s a wonderful time of year to be in Darwin!

It’s all happening in the border country between the APY and the Ngaanyatjarra.  Ninuku Arts services the artists from the Pipalyatjara and Kalka communities.  Their second show with us launches on Thursday August 3rd featuring many artists including Harry Tjutjuna, Jimmy Donegan, Jennifer Forbes and Angela Watson.  This is an exquisite selection of fine desert works that are well priced and collectable.

Rug up for Winter!

We have supported Better World Arts since their inception in 2002 and sell many of their cross-cultural products here in the gallery - boxes, bangles, cushion covers and Xmas decorations.  However, our first products from them still are the best!  They are their chain stitched rugs from many artists.  These sell at a very affordable price.  Here are a few to consider from our current stock.

Ruby Williamson

A long time ago, in 2002, we had a call from the Amata community art centre Minymaku Arts wanting us to consider buying some art.  We so did and discovered the inimitable Tjangawa Ruby Williamson.  We presented her paintings in her first 2 solo exhibitions in 2003 and 2005.  Recently we repurchased one of her very first paintings.  It’s special!
