Legislative Update

Legislative Update from Interim Executive Director Peg Birk:

Great news to begin the weekend!
The Governor has vetoed HF 890, the E-12 Education budget bill.

His veto letter has a compelling statement about Perpich:
"Further, students who are interested in and have a talent for the arts should not be punished by closing the Perpich Center for Arts Education. Although a recent OLA report identified governance issues, the new board chair and members are diligently addressing those issues. I insist that the school remain open. A school devoted to arts education is a statewide asset. And I will not permit you to desecrate the memory and legacy of one of Minnesota’s Governors."

The Governor's letter in its entirety can be found at:

Thank you to all of our many supporters. We will keep you posted as this bill heads back to the Legislature.
Dance Performance

Perpich dance presented their spring concert featuring student work and professional work. Guest choreographer Penny Freeh choreographed Starmap, world premier, on the senior dancers. The dancers presented work ranging in styles from ballet to jazz to modern and hip hop. It was a beautiful performance. Kudos to instructor Mary Harding and the dancers!

Guest Artist in Music

Yuichi Kimura from Japan, master Taiko drummer, visited Perpich's African drumming class recently, courtesy of alumna Emma Valentine, a mean Taiko drummer herself! An amazing demonstration and an unexpected drum jam from two very different cultures.
