Join us on Sunday, January 31
Adult Education at 8:45am.
The Adult Class will begin its observance of
Black History Month this Sunday.
The topic will be a discussion of the book, America's Original Sin: Racism,
White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America by Jim Wallis (2015).
“Fifty years ago, Wallis was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered dealing with racism to be taboo.
His participation in the civil rights movement
brought him back when he discovered a faith that commands racial justice.
Yet as recent tragedies confirm, we continue to suffer
from the legacy of racism.”
The class will be led by David Wood with Lillie McLaughlin assisting .
You are encouraged to read the book in advance of the class
BUT it is not necessary.
All are welcome! Join us via zoom (invite below) at 8:45!

Candle of Remembrance
Today we begin our celebration of African American History Month
a day early with a Litany of Remembrance and the lighting of a candle.
It is a tradition among many in the African American community
to remember the ancestors during large gatherings and celebrations
such as family reunions, weddings and
African American history observances often with a litany, prayers and a candle.
We continue that tradition with our Litany of Remembrance
on the first Sunday and the lighting of the candle of remembrance
each Sunday during African American History Month.
Communion is being celebrated. You are invited to bring something
to eat and something to drink when you join us for on-line worship.
Using elements familiar to them,
Jesus used bread and wine for his Last Supper with his disciples.
If you’re unable to have juice and bread,
bring something familiar to you.

Offering of Our Gifts
You can mail offering to: FPC, 362 State St, Albany, NY 12210

INSTRUCTIONS Facebook Live Streaming: we’ll normally start broadcasting about 3 to 5 minutes before the service (so 9:55–9:57) with Trevor’s prelude. Any time after that go the main Facebook page for First Presbyterian Church of Albany. Very close to the top (or maybe just by scrolling down slightly) you’ll see the video with the words “Live now” or something similar. Click on the video and it will open into a larger window and play.  So just stay on the First Pres home page, no need to go into Events or any other sub-page.
HELPFUL TIP: if you don’t see the livestream on the home page, refresh / reload your browser screen.  Don’t hesitate to call Dwight Cheu at 518.469.1544 if you have any problems.

Combating Systemic Racism

Share Your Antiracist Reading Insights
One First Pres priority is “combating systemic racism both within and outside the church.”  A number of events in the last year highlight the urgency of taking steps to overcome systemic racism: the mob of predominately white people who met little resistance as they stormed our nation’s Capitol on January 6 compared to the violent treatment of some Black Lives Matter protestors; the killing of black people, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, sometimes by white police officers; and the higher death rate among black and brown victims of COVID-19.
What can we do to overcome systemic racism?  One crucial step is to learn more about underlying biases in our institutions and in ourselves.
Many church members are already reading and discussing books and articles that address this underlying racism.  Whether you are reading antiracist articles and books on your own or with a group, the Membership Committee invites you to share your insights and thoughts with fellow members in First Pres eblasts.  What did you find enlightening?  For whom would you recommend this particular book or article?  Reviews of children’s books on antiracism are also welcome.  We also invite reviews of other media addressing racism, such as movies, TV shows, and podcasts.
Please email your mini book reviews to: Carol Green.  Questions about book reviews may be directed to Carol Green at email or call or text 518-331-1447.
