WANTED – Passionate People who believe every child should have the chance to reach their full potential. If this describes you, please join the Wizard’s Wardrobe family of tutors. We have our last training of this school year coming up after the holidays on January 15 & 22.

The two-day training considers how racism and poverty affect our students’ learning and teaches the trainees about the 5 components of reading, brain development and lesson planning.

Our elementary students come twice a week for an hour and a half each time. Each student has one (or two) tutor(s) that meet with them one-on-one consistently throughout the school year. When a tutor can come only once a week, the student is assigned two tutors.

Our training takes place at our space at 20 Rensselaer Street in Albany, 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. A light breakfast, beverages and refreshments are provided. To register call 518-776-0664 or send an email to

First Pres, through the Social Justice and Peacemaking Committee, has been working with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. Here are opportunities for education and advocacy:

On Monday, January 17th at 5pm (MLK Day) we’re joining with numerous local organizations, including the Albany County Central Federation of Labor and the Albany NAACP:

“Labor & Community: United for Social Justice”

The event will include:

  • a historical and contemporary look at Dr. King’s legacy.
  • a documentary titled “Be Alright Be Alright” recounting stories of the sanitation workers, the labor strike that changed the civil rights movement.
We will engage on the implications for workers today.
  • labor and community leaders will engage in a roundtable and neighborhood discussion on the Albany Multi-craft Apprenticeship Preparation Program (MAPP) and the role such labor initiatives play in communities of color, along with ways to improve and expand such initiatives.

Proof of vaccination will be required at the door for in-person attendees, and the event will be live streamed at

The General Meetings of the Capital Region Poor People’s Campaign are moving to the third Thursday of each month, so this month will be January 20th, 6:30pm. You can RSVP for call info here.

Would you like to help run the audio-visual systems during the church service? You would control the soundboard, which broadcasts the audio throughout the sanctuary and the Internet broadcasting software that delivers the Facebook livestream. And, of course, you'd receive full training.

Our team shares these duties so that your commitment would be between 8 - 12 Sundays per year.

If interested, please contact Dwight Cheu at We also welcome high school students too -- this would be a great introduction to audio and video broadcasting.
