Reviews of Antiracism Resources

Resource: Inheriting the Trade: A Northern Family Confronts Its Legacy as the Largest Slave-Trading Dynasty in U.S. History
By Thomas Norman DeWolf
Reviewed by Miriam Lawrence Leupold

Did you know that one of the largest US slaveholding families lived in Rhode Island? In 2000 Katrina Colston Browne wrote a letter to her ‘kith and kin’ to invite them to explore with her their common ancestors, the DeWolf family. She had been working on a documentary about the DeWolfs, the role of New England in slavery and the legacy of all this in the present. Thomas Norman DeWolf signed on for the exploration. This book shares his experience as he travels from New England to West Africa to Cuba with 9 other DeWolf descendants and learns about the slave trade and their ancestors’ involvement in it. Mr. DeWolf shares their firsthand experiences and how this family deals with what they learn.

Do you have an antiracism book or other resource you want to share?

One First Pres priority is “combating systemic racism both within and outside the church.”  Many of you are already reading and discussing books and articles that address this underlying racism, and the Membership Committee invites you to share your insights and thoughts in First Pres eblasts.  What did you find enlightening?  For whom would you recommend this particular book or article?  Reviews of other media addressing racism, such as movies, TV shows, podcasts and children’s resources are welcome.  Please email your mini review to: Carol Green.  Questions about reviews may be directed to Carol Green at email or call or text 518-331-1447.

There will be a garden workday at First Pres on Saturday, May 15, from
2-4PM. We will plant flowering annuals to fill in the bare spots in the
garden. We can make the garden bloom for the Center Square garden walk,
at the end of June. Planting is always a satisfying activity, with
results that will be with us for months, into the fall.

The church has a limited number of garden tools, so bring your own
(labeled) if you've got them. The rain date will be Sunday, the 16th, at
the same time. Contact Katie Henrikson via email or call 518-533-7441 if you have questions.

WPC Church School Food Drive

Saturday, May 22, 2021
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Westminster Pres Church parking lot
Many neighbors are in especial economic difficulty in the pandemic. The drive-thru Food Drive is our way of showing kindness to our neighbors and guests at the FOCUS food pantry. The purpose is to help stock the pantry.

Non-perishable donation items - for example:
  • Canned items: vegetables, fruits, and soups
  • Packaged goods: pasta, rice or cereal, and shelf or canned milk
  • Personal care items: toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo/conditioner

When people arrive to donate, they should pull up into the parking lot, pop open their trunks and the children and youth will pick up the donations and shut the trunks. Helpers will bag or box items. All helpers will wear masks.

This is a wonderful opportunity to support our children and youth in helping our neighbors contact John Bossung 518-275-8205, or Molly Dowell Baum 712-986-6010 with any questions.
