A Message from the Social Justice and Peacemaking and Stewardship Committees
|
|
|
We are a congregation which strives to steward the many gifts we have received from God in service to others. One way we use our gifts to serve others is by working for peace and justice in our society. We carry out that bold goal in many ways through the work of the Social Justice and Peacemaking (SJ&P)
Committee. Through our collective Social Justice and Peacemaking efforts, we use our gifts to seek peace and justice by:
- Advocating for the end of food insecurity by writing to our elected officials in our annual Bread for the World letter writing campaign.
- Continuing to support our LGBTQ siblings by providing financial support locally for the Capital Pride Center and nationally to More Light Presbyterians and visibly demonstrate our support through our participation in the annual Capital District Pride Parade.
- Remembering lives lost by lifting up their names on the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
- Supporting the Poor People’s Campaign, including by providing a scholarship to an individual to attend the Poor People’s Campaign March on Washington.
- Educating ourselves and our community about environmental justice and exploring becoming an Earth Care congregation.
None of this can happen without you, none of this can happen without us collectively stewarding our gifts to serve others. We hope you join us by embracing our call to be stewards and by your willingness to volunteer your time, talents, treasures, and most of all your prayers.
With you, we are a congregation that works for peace and justice in our society.

An update about our Prayer Chain: If you have a prayer concern or a prayer need that you would like to have lifted in prayer on a continuing basis, please remember the prayer chain. You can email a request to firstpresprayer@yahoo.com or call the church office (518-449-7332) and your request will be forwarded. Please note: This is a new email address, with a new facilitator: Grace White. Thanks go out to Harriet Seeley for the work she has done heading up this important care group at First Pres.
Information for those who are new or visiting: The First Pres prayer chain is a group of people that have committed to pray for the needs of others as they arise. These requests for prayer are separate and/or different from the “prayers of the people” that are wonderfully available each Sunday.
Another way to describe the prayer chain is to say that it consists of a group of people willing to “meet” with God as we mediate between God and humanity to release blessings. We are partners with the Almighty when we ask for those blessings according to His will. If you are not already a member of the prayer chain and wish to join, please contact Grace at firstpresprayer@yahoo.com.
Reminders:
- The request may remain private if you wish and not be open to the entire congregation. Let us know in your email.
- All prayers are held in confidence
- The prayer chain also prays for those mentioned in corporate worship.
- You will not be contacted by anyone on the Prayer Chain. Their job is JUST TO PRAY! If you have other needs from the church, contact the church office.
- Members of the Chain love updates on what they are praying for, so send along if possible.

Sabbatical Share
So, what did Glenn and Miriam do while they were on their sabbatical?
Set aside an evening in November to find out!
On Friday, November 18, join us for a potluck supper at 6 pm.
Glenn and Miriam will offer a complete account of their grand adventure at 7pm.
There will be plenty of photos of Scotland, France, and several locations here in
the U.S. as proof of a time that brought renewal to your Co-Pastors.
Learn about the castles, cathedrals, churches, Neolithic sites,
labyrinths, food, birds, friends and family that made
their sabbatical a wonderful and meaningful experience.
Save the date now and sign up by contacting Jamie in the church office.
