Increasing Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics through Student Curiosity
All students should be able to joyfully engage in mathematics. They should build conceptual understanding of appropriate concepts while also developing procedural fluency. By using many approaches to solving a problem and differentiated instruction, we can work to meet the needs of all students.

Dr. Matthew Beyranevand is a mathematics education teacher, coordinator, professor, and coach who helps teachers and districts increase students’ engagement in mathematics while improving student learning and achievement. Through professional development, as well as analysis of school mathematics documents, Dr. Beyranevand is able to help teachers and schools with their mathematics curriculum, instruction, assessments, and vision.

Matthew is a proud ambassador for the Global Math Project. Our aim is to thrill 1 million students, teachers, and adults with an engaging piece of mathematics during one special week in 2017. The first Twitter chat is Tuesday, January 31st at 8:00 p.m. EST using the hashtag #GMW.

Final edits were submitted for Matthew's book Teach Math Like This, Not Like That: Four Critical Areas to Improve Student Learning. For each of the ideas presented, two different perspectives will be detailed. The first is Not like This which is often the traditional way of teaching mathematics or the less effective approach. The second perspective is Teach Like This which is Matthew's recommended approach based upon research & experience.

Matthew and his Chelmsford team will be presenting on Math Music Videos at the Learn Launch Innovation Showcase Conference Friday, February 3rd at Hynes Convention Center in Boston. Chelmsford Middle School students will be giving an ignite talk on the impact of the math music videos on their learning. If attending, stop by to say hi and learn what we are doing!
