Let's talk SEO (Search Engine Optimization). While much has been written on the topic over the past two decades, the basics are pretty straightforward:
  • Create helpful content
  • Get people to link to it
That said, the difference between a post that hasn't been optimized for search engines and a refreshed version can be significant. Here's an example:
The orange line is the traffic to a five-year-old post from October 12 - 31 while the blue line shows what happened to traffic after I refreshed the post on November 1st. The post went from 3 visits per day from Google to almost 9. If those results hold, that could mean over 1000 more visitors over the next year from roughly two hours of work.

I wrote more about refreshing old content on the blog this week, so check it out and let me know what you think. This is one of the easiest ways to increase traffic from search engines on an existing site and it really does work.

Yes, backlinks are important for SEO, but it's not purely a numbers game:

Another refresh case study I ran across this week:

"For most of its first year, my blog was getting less than 50 daily impressions. Today, after fixing the issues I'm about to talk about, I get over 1000 daily impressions and it's still growing!"
