JUNE/JULY 2021
June 30 marked Sheri Goldberg’s last day as chair of our Community Relations Committee
For the last three years, Sheri led our efforts to deepen relationships with New Jersey’s elected leaders, expanding the Washington Leadership Mission in 2020 to include four other New Jersey Federations. Under Sheri’s leadership we created two new programs to help prepare our high school students for the challenges they may one day face on campus -- #ILEAD (Israel Leadership, Education and Advocacy Day) and the AIPAC Parent/Teen Cohort, which brings 15 pairs of students and parents to Policy Conference each year.

During her tenure with CRC, Sheri worked tirelessly to highlight the struggles of thousands of Ethiopian Jews stranded in Addis Ababa, awaiting permission to make aliyah. Through her lobbying efforts, she helped secure Federation allocations to support these Ethiopians, many of whom have been waiting for years to reunite with family in Israel.

Sheri’s commitment and love for Israel was highlighted again last month when she joined our Jewish Federation’s Solidarity Mission for 72 hours on the ground in Israel, where she kept the community updated through her social media posts. Her commitment to building bridges has enabled us to create a sense of global Jewish Peoplehood. We’re deeply grateful for all that Sheri’s done, for her love of Israel and the Jewish community, and for all she will continue to do as immediate past chair and member of our new CRC steering committee.

CRC’s incoming chair, Zev Scherl, brings many years of lay experience to his new position.
Zev previously served as co-chair of Major Gifts and co-chair of the Business and Professionals Network at our Federation. Zev describes himself as a passionate Zionist since childhood, and passionate about our Jewish community and its relationship to the greater community.

“I’m honored and excited to take on this role,” he says. “I look forward to continuing the great work of my predecessor Sheri Goldberg. Together with our new CRC steering committee, we will build bridges of understanding and address the important issues of the day with our legislators, our community and our neighbors.”

Upcoming CRC Events and Programs
Among the major events on the calendar this year will be candidate forums for New Jersey gubernatorial, state senate, and assembly races; CRC’s annual Washington Leadership Mission; and a legislative mission to Israel in early 2022.

As we look ahead to the coming year, CRC will continue its signature Israel advocacy programs for high school students (#ILEAD, Write On For Israel, AIPAC Parent/Teen Cohort, and Israel Engagement Fellowship) and will explore parallel programs for adults. And our Anti-Racism Task Force will continue its work in educating the community about ongoing racism and pursuing social justice through advocacy and service projects.
Please mark your calendar for CRC’s first meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 30.
Have a great summer,
