Workshops at Quarterly Gathering

Friends: We are soliciting new workshop ideas for our October 2021 Quarterly Gathering. We are planning a hybrid gathering in October: an in-person gathering with Zoom options. This, of course, depends upon the status of the pandemic at that time. Some workshops may be in person and some may be on Zoom.

If you are interested in providing a workshop, please send the following information to me before September 24, 2021: Your name, email address, phone number, church/meeting affiliation, a title for your workshop, a 2-3 sentence description of the workshop and a one sentence description of the workshop provider. Also indicate if your workshop will be in person or on zoom or can be both. The workshops will be from 11 AM-12:30 PM on October 23rd.

Friends Provide Relief in Cuba

On July 11, demonstrators in Cuba took to the streets to protest shortages of food, medicine, and electricity. We have heard from Friends in Cuba that people are struggling and in dire need of economic and material support. We stand in solidarity with the Quaker community and with Cubans from all political and religious affiliations who are struggling during this time, and we believe that people should have the right to protest without being criminalized.

Stand in Solidarity with Colombia

The critical violations to human rights in Colombia unveils the fragility in political and socio-economic structures. The current crisis highlights the urgent need for solidarity with nonviolent social movements. Peacebuilding en Las Américas (PLA) has partnered with peace activists in Colombia since 2006 to offer training in nonviolent conflict transformation. In the first five months of 2021, over 140 people in Colombia participated in nine Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshops. Our Colombian colleagues are eager to continue and expand this work, needed now more urgently than ever.

It is an exciting time to be a part of the youth committee, especially if you have skills in strategic planning! Their work right now is focused on dreaming and crafting something new for our young people. Being a part of the youth committee right now means you can help us shape and launch something new! The meetings are usually by Zoom and occur several times a year. For more information on this committee and/or committee membership contact Matt Boswell at nominating@scymf.org.

Each week, we're featuring a different committee, working group, or task force and highlighting how they serve the yearly meeting. You can always nominate yourself or someone who you know has gifts to serve with our online form.
