Workshops

1. Word

Facilitated by Julie Peyton, West Hills Friends, Julie is semi-retired from teaching chemistry at Portland State, and she likes word-play: I’ve been categorizing the words we need to speak/hear when we gather for worship and listing those categories in an order of importance. Come help me write this up— challenge, push back, add more. What I’ve got so far includes announcements, reports, testimony/testifying, teaching/education, sermons, vocal ministry, prayer requests, and a few more.

2. Trans 101

Led by Elias Craig (they/he), North Seattle/Wayside, and Anthony Kirk (he/him), Klamath Falls Friends Church: This workshop will serve as an introduction to trans identities including the gender spectrum, terminology, trans oppression and microaggressions, and an opportunity to ask questions. Our meetings can benefit from a clearer understanding of the nuances of gender and trans identities and ways to be more inclusive, as we can often be unknowingly exclusionary or transphobic through our language and practices.

Elias (they/he) is a transmasculine Christian, member of North Seattle Friends Church, and has enjoyed being an intern at Wayside Friends Church the past two years. Anthony (he/him) is a transgender Christian and the pastor of Klamath Falls Friends Church.

3. Dreaming Time

What are our hopes for SCYMF Children and Youth Programming? Mark Pratt-Russum, Facilitator. Mark is a Released Minister at West Hills Friends: Walking effectively with our SCYMF children and youth requires the presence of a larger village than SCYMF’s Youth Committee could ever supply. We ask everyone who wants strong youth programs in our Yearly Meeting, and in local churches, to discuss the way forward and figure out sustainable ways to help. We will spend time dreaming and listening to God's leading. By the end of this workshop we hope to have a vision for the future of youth programming at SCYMF. We especially want our young people to be present!

4. The Power of Enough

Facilitator: Jackie Stillwell, New England Yearly Meeting: How can we balance our use of time, energy, and “things,” to free us for action to do God’s work and to contribute to right order in our community? Through personal reflection and discussion we will explore queries to discover our power of enough.

Jackie Stillwell is the general secretary for Right Sharing of World Resources, and a lifelong Quaker.

5. Climate Advocacy Toolkit: Stories of Faith-based Climate Action

Led by Cherice Bock and Mariah Shriner: With the unprecedented 2020 wildfire season across the West Coast and rising temperatures, we can all feel and see the immediate need to care for God’s creation in ways that lead toward a just and sustainable future. Advocacy for climate and environmentally just policies can be a powerful tool to enact meaningful change. In this workshop, learn from leaders involved in climate advocacy at the state and national levels about the lobbying process, how to share your story with lawmakers in a compelling way, how to get involved in advocacy efforts, and the deep spiritual work of connecting with God and creation that undergirds it all.

After serving as a Quaker Voluntary Service fellow with the Oregon Sierra Club, Mariah Shriner joined the Friends Committee on National Legislation as the program assistant for FCNL’s Sustainable Energy & Environment Program in August 2020. Cherice Bock is a member of SCYMF and works as creation justice advocate at Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, leading Oregon Interfaith Power & Light’s climate organizing and advocacy efforts.
